Eh...
Lego_Darth6 September 2006
Well, it didn't make me sad about seeing it. The narration in the beginning made me expect some wonderful coming of age tale for these girls. I was disappointed. I expected lots of good laughs. I was disappointed. I expected great indie performances; I was disappointed. The whole movie was a watered-down version of what it could of been. It just came off average. The female actors were given great roles, and didn't achieve greatness. David Boreanz did an adequate job; his part, however, may have been his downfall. The character was at one moment charming and the next a complete ass. I didn't feel the writing kept true to the character and served the sketchy plot more than the character. The ending was pretty dynamic though. It was an interesting story that wasn't told very interestingly. Oh well, it is still worth a watch though. I'm sure some people will like it far more than I did.

VERY entertaining
InnerNet23 September 2005
I had the Pleasure of attending the Toronto international Film Festival and the extended pleasure of watching the World premier of "These Girls". I must say I am thoroughly impressed at the work of the team and ecstatic at the fact that this movie made history as the first New Brunswick film in TIFF history.

John Hazlett's directing technique and Alex Vendler's Cinematography made for excellent artsy eye candy. The film had a pleasing flow with nearly flawless editing and the talent were a most entertaining team.

David Boreanaz's work never surprises or excites me, however, his performance in this comedic role has given me a new outlook on his work... I quite liked this bumbling burnt-out character. The three girls pulled their own as well and presented terrific chemistry with each other and Boreanaz. Also, it is to my understanding that most other roles besides the four were played by local talent who were by all means wonderfully talented.

"These Girls" will do well as a result of Boreanaz's fan base and the success of the whole team to make a VERY entertaining film.

Male dream turns wrong
SnoopyStyle11 September 2015
Keira St. George (Caroline Dhavernas) is a freshman in university recalling what she did during the summer. Her best friends back in her small town are Glory Lorraine (Amanda Walsh) and religious ballplayer Lisa MacDougall (Holly Lewis). Keith Clark (David Boreanaz) is a local with a wife and kid. He's friendly with Gordon Gruber who is a bit slow. Gordon tells Keira about Keith growing pot in his backyard. Keira and Lisa go to steal a few leaves and peep Keith having sex with Glory. Glory tells Keira that she loves Keith and he's a great lover. Keira is bored and decides to have sex with Keith. Lisa also wants to have sex with Keith before she's baptized as born-again. Keith has enough of the girls and tries to end it. Instead, the three girls blackmail Keith and make up a schedule to share him.

First of all, these girls are no teenagers. The youngest Amanda Walsh is mid-20s while Holly Lewis is pushing 30. It's very odd when women who don't look like teenagers try to act like teenagers. This tries to be funny by turning the usual sexual ideas upside down. It doesn't really get there. It tries to end with wild screwball fun but it doesn't get there either. Caroline Dhavernas has a sly sensibility which I love. It's not as edgy or as funny as it could have been.

good idea, then falls flat
pepekwa26 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
the idea of three teenagers wanting to bed a married guy with a child is sheer fantasy for many an adult male and so the premise of this movie is interesting for many. This started off well as each girl takes their turn and then set up rotas but the writers probably ran out of ideas just when there could be a really intriguing and/or funny ending. They opted for a "safe" non controversial conclusion which was disappointing. This was also one of those movies which couldn't make its mind up if wanted to be a comedy or a drama but that can also be blamed on the weak directing and the director unsurprisingly has not made any movie in 5 years. This is rainy day stuff and isn't terrible, a plus is that i'll also be looking out for the very beautiful caroline dhavernas from now on as well.

Excellent Comedy
jakibros21 January 2007
This movie starts out a little slow but kicks into comedic gear quickly. Each of the three "teenage girls" offer their own believable, distinct, assertive and entertaining personalities. I particularly enjoyed the dialog and interaction between Keith and Lisa. If one looked beyond the superficial "action" that was taking place, Keith's character treated Lisa's "deflowering" with tenderness and consideration. The comic development that followed was also pulled in expertly in my opinion. David Boreanaz gives a wonderful performance as the adult male who clearly gets himself into more trouble than he can handle. Dialogue was sharp, quick and flowed nicely. The director and writer of this film clearly showed how none of the main characters got to claim the moral high ground after all the shenanigans they pulled. Although the movie appears light on the surface, it reflects all the gray areas of becoming an adult, human emotions and desire.

Sexually deviant comedy that doesn't really make you laugh
Robert_duder7 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
These Girls is just a completely average film in every way. The cast tries their best but the script is sub-par and sleazy and really carries no real weight. It doesn't try to play to any particular demographic, certainly not teens or shouldn't be and anyone older than thirty and you might feel a little dirty watching this film about 16 and 17 year old girls seducing and more or less raping a 30+ year old man, who is married and whose baby is quite often in the next room or with him. Even though the three actresses portraying teenagers are well into their twenties it doesn't make the film any less sexually deviant or disturbing. There is just something wrong about the whole thing. Based on a French Canadian play the film is just a mish-mash of weirdness but I suppose with some decent performance by the lead cast.

David Boreanaz, I admit I'm a fan, loved him through Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Angel and I am now an avid watcher of Bones and he is good in the lead role as sleazy serial cheater Keith Clark. I don't think this film will do a thing for his career but his role is good and he does a decent job. I don't know how he got tied up with this one though?? Relatively experienced Canadian actress Caroline Dhavernas, plays the lead girl and narrator Keira St-George. She does come across as the most intelligent and the leader of the group but their actions make them all sleazy no matter what they do outside of that. Out of the three girls she did the best job as little as that might be saying. Relative newcomer Holly Lewis plays the youngest, most inexperienced of the group. She is religiously obsessive but feels the need to experience sex once before going away to 7th Day Adventist school. I found her annoying and her portrayal as such a young school girl really disturbing and the sex scene she shares with Boreanaz was just borderline wrong and disgusting. Amanda Walsh, former Much Music VJ plays Glory Lorraine, and I think possibly gave the best performance. Her character Glory was truly infatuation with Keith and believed she loved him and gets screwed over by him and her friends. Her portrayal as being so much younger came across as kind of weird at times too but she was still better than most in the film.

Certainly I would not describe These Girls as a "chick flick" because the film is completely and utterly demeaning to women. But in all fairness it's kind of completely and utterly demeaning to men too. The film can only be best described as a sleaze-fest with no real outcome although they try to make it seem like Keith Clark gets what's coming to him but he doesn't. I even saw a review that compared this to the recent film "John Tucker Must Die" and although These Girls might try to follow that formula it certainly never comes across as that. Definitely pass this one over unless you're a huge fan of one of the main characters. You'll be disappointed. Despite a slightly watchable and a graciously short time span it's really not worth seeing. 5/10

Very cool indie dark comedy about 3 very dangerously horny teen girls
badgrrlkane12 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Very cool dark comedy about a teen girl having an affair w/h the guy she's babysitting for when her 2 girlfriends find out, they decide they want some sex from him as well & at first he thinks he's hit the infidelity jackpot but when he decides to end it they have different thoughts on the matter & begin blackmailing him for sex. It has some very funny moments & as I'm one of those women who are totally infatuated with David Boreanaz, the sex scenes & finally the steamy vision of his naked butt & frontal nude scene made this film a recommended film from your truly. I felt sorry for David's character Keith but then towards the end your realize he's just as big of a jerk as the teen girls are manipulative wenches so it all works out. I thought it was gonna suck but it turned out to be a pretty decent indie after all. *** out of *****

Disgusting!!!
three_mom2 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of this movie is ugghhhh. The guy is married and yet everyone on this site seems to think, "Yeah, this is funny, cute, and a good movie." What the Hell?!?! What is funny about immature girls having sex with a married man with a new baby? What is cute about the fact that he is cheating on his wife? What would have been wrong with them finding some teenage boys to have sex with before starting college? Noooo, that is not good enough, the guy has to be married, off-limits, off-the-market, that's the one we gotta have. Dumb-ass GIRLS! Then one of the girls decides that she "loves" the guy. No, she just "loves" the way he makes her feel. Two of the girls are having fun with it, they think it is funny and no one seems to have any moral problem with what they are doing. It is just shameless, but yeah this is all good with everyone one this website. The dark-haired girl even has the audacity to have her dad pick her up from the guys house, under the ruse of baby- sitting. This is a morally disgusting movie and where is the wife? Poor woman working and paying the bills while he screws the baby-sitter.

So Happy!

I was in the play These Girls in Ottawa at Art's Court back in 1999 and had the pleasure of working with Vivienne Laxdal on the production. I would just like to say how delighted I am that her work was made into a movie. I loved playing Caroline.. who i believe is now Kiara.... she had such a great story around her. I must say it was probably the best play I have ever had the pleasure to be involved with, thanks in part to playing such a great character and also in having the wonderful words of encouragement from Vivienne at rehearsals, who is also an accomplished actress. I can not wait to see this movie, if they have kept close to the play it is sure to be a riot!

These Girls Got Away With It.
anaconda-406586 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
These Girls (2005): Dir: John Hazlett / Cast: Caroline Dhavemas, Holly Lewis, Amanda Walsh, David Boreanaz, Paul Spence: Divert low budget comedy about the collaboration of three teenage girls who blackmail a married man who is having sex with one of them. His growing pot adds to trouble so they enter as separate babysitters to engage in sexual activity. Controversial subject matter is somewhat repetitious yet works largely due too the different backgrounds and personalities of the girls. Conclusion leaves questions regarding distribution of consequences. Well directed by John Hazlett although photography and locations are drab. Fine performances by college bound Caroline Dhavernas who devises the scheme. Her father wishes that she would consider college. Holly Lewis brings humour as her religious beliefs and sexual urges clash. Amanda Walsh is involved with a married man played by David Boreanaz whom initiates the problem and clearly meets consequences. Paul Spence plays a biker friend of his who agrees to help him scare off the girls only to end up arrested. However the film seems to be a one sided argument where these girls get away with blackmail. After all, who would want "these girls" to babysit their children when they have other motives? Strong theme of sexual curiosity and consequences for illegal sexual behavior, which is more serious than funny. Score: 6 / 10

I don't love it, but don't hate it
SMALLWHEELS1014 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest I saw the movie cause it had the guy from angel in it..And I really enjoyed his character. The movie was OK, it had its entertaining moments. But i dunno just got dumb. I mean OK it starts off where you meet these three girls and they are from a small town and bored with life. Well then there comes This hot dad named keith, and ya, he seems like a pretty cool dude. Well we come to find out he cheats on his wife with one of these girls. The other girls get jealous and want to lose their virginity to him. this is where it starts to get weird, they trade off babysitting for him, which aka means they are banging him. He tries to eventually get them off his back, which was a really good idea, but then i'm not sure what happens it kinda gets ridiculous and the movie makes it seem like he is that bad guy, which ur right, he shouldn't have been cheating so I guess thats what he gets, but my god, "these girls" are just stupid. Not happy with the ending, but like i said it had its entertaining moments

"These Girls" is a very funny look at the lives of three teenage girls
ScottDMenzel1 April 2006
I had the honor this evening to see a screening of the movie "These Girls" at the Philadelphia Film Festival. Going into the movie, I knew very little about it and just took a chance on it because the film's plot sounded interesting. So as I entered the theater just hours ago I wondered what the final verdict would be thumbs up or thumbs down.

"These Girls" is the story about three best friends from a small town. Keira (Caroline Dhavernas) is the ringleader who basically doesn't know what to do with her life after High School but her father keeps pushing her to go to college which is something she doesn't want to do. Lisa (Holly Lewis) will be going away to a Christian school after the summer. And finally, Glory (Amanda Walsh) who plans on spending her summer babysitting. But this summer is going to be a special one as they all blackmail Keith Clark (David Boreanaz) the sexy older hunk who they baby-sit for. Fun times and a lot of laughs ensue…

I normally don't like movies like "These Girls" but there is something about this movie that I really liked. I think the quality I liked most about it was that it seemed rather realistic. Three girls who want to explore their sexuality pick a hunky guy who lets all of them have sex with him only to be blackmailed by them later. It's a pretty funny tale about growing up, friendship and sex but even though it sounds pretty cheesy I can see majority of this film happening in real life.

The subject matter here is probably a main reason why this film didn't get a mainstream release in the United States. All the girls in this film are suppose to be under 18 which if I remember correctly two of them are 17 and one is 16. Now in the USA even though underage sex occurs on a daily basis many production or finance companies won't finance a film like this because of the sexual content. This information was actually confirmed by the director himself John Hazlett at the Q&A after the film. The thing that gets me is that the sex scenes in this film aren't graphic and the nudity is minor. Not to mention that all the actresses in this film are way over 18 in real life. Go figure.

What the movie does best is it provides a lot of laughs as well as very strong characters. I liked all the characters in this movie and each character seemed to have a "Now & Then" characteristic to them. The jokes were funny because they were cleverly written not because they were dirty or over the top. Everything seemed to flow together nicely both the comedy and the drama. The script was very strong.

The acting was very good for the most part. I thought all the three girls were great. Caroline Dhavernas who also starred in one of the most underrated television series of all time "Wonderfalls" was just terrific; as well as Holly Lewis and Amanda Walsh who both did a fine job as well. David Boreanaz did a good job and he looked like he was having fun while shooting most of the scenes. The guy played a pot head so it was funny seeing him play that role.

I had the pleasure of meeting John Hazlett tonight who seemed like a very nice guy and was very appreciative of the comments made about the film. I am shocked that this movie didn't go anywhere. I think with a little marketing behind it, it could have taken off. Sadly it's going to be one of these direct to DVD films which so few will ever have the pleasure to see. I think with what little budget Mr. Hazlett had to work with, the film turned out well and I think he did a fine job directing this little gem.

For someone who typically hates teen sex comedies I can honestly say I really enjoyed this film. The character development and witty script allowed me to sit there for an hour and a half and be amused. This is a fine comedy because it has heart and spunk to it. I know I will be sure to buy this film when it comes on DVD on May 16, 2006. If you're a fan of coming of age stories, teen sex comedies, or romantic comedies be sure to check this film out because it's one of the funniest films of its kind to be released in years.

MovieManMenzel's final rating for "These Girls" is an 8/10.

Entertaining Romantic Comedy
Verenti18 September 2005
I had the pleasure of watching this two chairs down from (one of?) the Executive Producer at the Atlantic Film Festival, Which was interesting because he laughed at very different times than the rest of us.

Filmed in Atlantic Canada, the movie is about three teen-aged girls who in one of their last summers of their youth, devote a large deal of energy to sleeping with a married 30-year old man, despite much protestation.

It's definitely worth a watch, but the humour was geared a completely different demographic than the one I inhabit (Male 18-25), so I was shaking my head at the character's antics rather than laughing. Inspite of this, the story is strong enough to hold up for itself make it entertaining, without so much laughing.

big surprise
Prepskoolqueen9230 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
My friends and I rented this movie simply to satisfy a friend who was very bent on renting it despite having no idea what it was about. We all thought it would be like "a Canadian American Pie" but when we watched it we were completely surprised, we were all silent throughout the movie and loved it! It was nothing like American Pie and had a plot that teenage girls are sure to adore (seeing as the guy gets the crap beaten out of him at the end), after that night it became my favorite movie for not only it's plot but the actors and the great writing. There wasn't a moment where i thought that it was unbelievable. Everything is very realistic and relate-able for anybody living in a small town with little prospects. I absolutely adore this movie and would recommend you to rent it next time you have a chance, it's worth it.

I had enjoyed most of this very interesting movie
edgeoforever23 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with the posters before that the characters were exceptionally strong and believable and all the actors at their top form. I especially loved David Boreanaz stretching in a part so unlike anything else he played proving once again his amazing gift for comedy. The first part of the movie was light and funny, the blackmail part was a bit surrealistic but interesting - and it was all downhill from there.

I found it frustrating that at least two out of the 3 girls (Keira and Lisa) get out of the blackmail&betrayal scot free, nary a trace left on their psyche. I know the movie amended the darker ending of the play - and I am not saying I missed the murder part. But I surely needed to see those two getting their comeuppance somehow and I was left groaning in frustration with the ending. (It's why I gave it only a 9)

But definitely an interesting film.

Cute, funny, and harmless
GlendaTGW9 August 2006
Finding the premise intriguing, and reading the reviews, and being an Angel fan, I watched this movie. It's sexy and original, and quite entertaining. David Boreanaz is Keith. He's a hunky married man, stay at home Dad, and he feels a little inadequate in his marriage. He makes the mistake of penetrating a close circle of teenage girls who are fascinated with the idea of doing it with an older man. They'll do anything to get into his bed, including beg, lie, and blackmail, but they mostly try to push his buttons. The nuttiness that ensues sends Keith reeling, and pushes friendships to the edge. David Boreanaz shows a little skin in this one-- and he's looking hot. Yes-he plays a sleazy cheat - but he shows enough vulnerability and tenderness toward the goofy teens that you end up cheering for him in the end. One more thing, when someone moans "oh yeah, oh..oh..YEAH!!", it's hard to see them as a victim of rape.

Your Caroline in Ottawa stage production
v-laxdal23 March 2006
Tanya! What a kind and wonderful message you posted - thank you! I hope you enjoy the film - it certainly is a romp for me! Your portrayal of Caroline remains an inspiration - you gave her such a good "kick" in the Ottawa production - really focused her and brought into her own. I will always appreciate you for that.

A note - her role and rationale has been modified for the film version - she's now "Keira" - but her wry humor that you really woke me to in your performance, and that I tried to capture in the subsequent draft for the Calgary production at One Yellow Rabbit, has absolutely made it all the way to big screen.

Right On, Tanya! Hope all is well with you, Viv

As a "small town girl" I SO understood this movie!!!!!!
myprivatequarters23 June 2010
I've got to tell you, I was extremely apprehensive to watch this movie because of its plot premise. It has the type of story line which would allow it to be played out in a very crude manor...but it wasn't.

Great acting all around, I was very able to relate to the situations in this movie. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved this film, and the fact that I actually felt sympathy for Keith was something I genuinely didn't expect, and felt that this was because of the portrayal of the actor. I actually felt his vulnerability, and most certainly didn't expect to, particularly given the subject matter. Although I have some difficulty believing that the three young females in question would have problems going along with the plan (one in particular), I found it an empowering example of the tables being turned, so to speak. Intead of the young females being dominated, the older man was subjugated.

For those of you who are wary to watch this because of it's content, that is a perfectly rational notion, BUT, as the product of a very small town (population 1600, born and raised), I am here to inform you that sex with the older guy who never made it "out" but yet in a young female's eyes is worldly, is very true and a very real thing. I must admit though, that Keith treated these girls far better than any of the men of that type in my hometown treated us! To conquer this "enigma", catapulted you into the stratosphere of alpha female, at least for a short time anyway. At the ripe old age of 15, I was playing it hot and heavy (and more) with a 27-year-old myself! No married ones though, that's just a taboo I could not break.

That's just the way it is in a small town. You have fun (lots of it), get married young, settle down and and become young parents. Then you stay married forever, divorce is not an option. That's the status quo, and the accepted norm, particularly in a dominantly Roman Catholic (95%) such as the one I grew up in. I was very wild in my teens ( just like my peer group), got married while in college at 21, became a mother at 22 and have been married for 15 years. Now, my daughter at 14, is beginning her rites of passage and I am so scared, LOL!

American Pie for girls!
pine_mythros6 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is a great movie. I read the brief synopsis and was unimpressed but as I watched it (mainly for Caroline Dhavernas) it grew on me.

It's such a nice change to see a movie where girls/young women are not punished for their sexuality. The girls are given full license to explore and even the chance to make mistakes without ridiculous repercussions.

Some of the scenes are absolutely hilarious - and many of them the supposedly erotic scenes - which were not over the top or distasteful. The male characters in the movie were brilliant - David Boreanaz was great as the fickle hunk - and what is great is that the movie doesn't make us hate him all that much. The other two younger male characters were good too, without being overbearing.

This is one of the best movies I've seen that has girls growing up and is quite empowering to see how the they realise their mistakes but eventually come through and carry on with their lives rather than drag their mistakes along with them.

I liked this film very much
robert-b13 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I am really amazed how little fame this film had. i think it has to do with distribution companies and etc.

Don't be idiots - if you are looking for a good fun take this movie - this is very nice movie to pass few hours with and the music is GREAT.

It's about ..... well girls and boys and whats between them with not too much story but not all movies should be PULP FICTION should they?? it's nice and cute and gives good time . The girls are also very good looking and this makes the whole movie even more enjoyable.

Why i gave it only a 9? well the story could be little more convincing from the middle and on. in some point you start to see events that are little less reliable. SMALL SPOILER: The baby is crying and the father goes in and tries to relax him. now i am not talking about some small cry but- no - hysteric cry and 30 sec after that the father goes out and "baby is sleeping"- excuse me , when and how exactly did you make him calm and sleep and be able to leave his room in 20-30 seconds. but ignore this kind of small picking because the film itself is not Docudrama - it's fun and this should be overlooked.
