Johnny has just arrived at college. He is a farmer boy and greener than the alfalfa on his father's acres. When he arrives at the school he is immediately made the butt of all jokes by his fellow students, particularly those of the leader of the sophomore class, Wally. But most of Wally's jokes recoil upon him-self except those which wind up disastrously for the dean, the father of Kathryn, the prettiest girl in town. Wallace is in love with Kathryn and when Johnny announces himself as the new football hero and attracts the attention of Kathryn, he gets mad. Johnny goes into training to make the football squad. He is more at home in overalls than in a football uniform but he keeps trying. He is treated rough in the gymnasium but still retains hope of making the team. He is finally honored with the position of water boy and mascot. The day of the big game arrives, with Johnny sitting on the sidelines, carrying blankets, water buckets and sponges. He is a pathetic looking figure in his huge uniform but still hopes to get into the game. After a particularly fierce scrimmage in which one of the college team is injured, the captain of the team sends to the bench for a substitute but finds they have all sneaked away, and there is no one left but Johnny. He is forced to put him into the home. Johnny knows less about football than he does about the fourth dimension but he is game to try. He is at the bottom of every scrimmage, half buried in the dirt. He gets the ball and tries for a touchdown but the team piles over him until he is overwhelmed. Then he tries strategy on them and makes the winning points and he is hailed as a hero by Kathryn.
