The series was shot in studio. The outside scenery seen in the series was added on the background of the actors in a then very modern technique not used in Finland before.
The nine episodes were entitled:
- 1. Bilbo
- 2. Tie (Road)
- 3. Vanha metsä (Old Forest)
- 4. Pomppiva poni (Prancing Pony)
- 5. Konkari (Strider)
- 6. Lórien
- 7. Mordor
- 8. Tuomiovuori (Mount Doom)
- 9. Vapautus (Liberation)
Kari Väänänen plays both Gollum and Aragorn in this series. However, the two characters never appear in the same episode.
The framing device with old Sam telling the story to the Hobbit children while consulting the manuscript in the Red Book parallels J.R.R. Tolkien's original Epilogue to "The Lord of the Rings" (published in the posthumous book "Sauron Defeated"), in which Sam has just finished reading the Red Book to his own children.
The series presents the story of the Ring as a tale being told by the elderly Samwise Gamgee to a group of young Hobbits. Therefore, it follows the story primarily from Frodo and Sam's point of view, omitting the other characters' storylines from "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King".
