Warning: Spoilers
This 39 minute documentary can be found on the two disk Divamax Special Edition DVD of "Dawn of the Dead". I don't recommend you watch it BEFORE you see the actual film, as it contains massive spoilers, but it's a very good supplement to watch after you see the film. It tells you how the script was MUCH huger then the budget would eventually allow. As well as going into casting, talking about the mines, the extras, and go into the special effects. It also features interviews with most of the main cast and a lot of the crew. It's a good documentary and at times better then the movie itself.

My Grade: B-

An Excellent Documentary
MovieManiacX2 November 2005
This is a very informative and very entertaining documentary on the 2-Disc Divimax Edition of Day of the Dead. It has interviews from everyone involved, including George A. Romero, Tom Savini, Greg Nicotero, and Richard P. Rubenstein. It explains how they pulled off some of the fantastically gory special effects and also informs us that Romero originally intended this to be a 'zombie epic'. It uses many clips from the movie and lots of production footage to explain everything. It's also never boring and edited nicely, making it easily re-watchable. If you're a fan of Romero's Dead films or zombies in general, this documentary is well worth your time.

Many Days of Day of the Dead, The (2003)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Very good 39-minute documentary about the making of DAY OF THE DEAD, George Romero's third film in his original zombie trilogy. Romero, Lori Gardille, Tom Savini, Greg Nicotero and Joseph Pilato are among the people interviewed as they look back on the film that was released to very negative reviews only to gain a cult following over the years. Needless to say, it's important that you watch the actual film before digging into this film because there's quite a few spoilers and some of the film's most memorable moments are on display here. Romero starts off talking about his original version that he wanted to go for but he then explains why they had to slash the budget when he couldn't guarantee an R-rated movie. So, it's a low-budget and an uncut release or a higher budget and going in front of the MPAA. From here we learn about the story, the casting and of course the masterful special effects. The documentary really does give you a great idea of what it was like working on the film from the locations to the dozens who showed up to put on the zombie make-up. Some of the best moments come from Savini and Nicotero as they discuss the various ways they did the effects and we get a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff showing the effects being pulled off. We even get some alternate camera angles from what is seen in the actual film. Fans of Romero or the film in question are certainly going to enjoy seeing this stuff.
