Ah, it’s almost that quiet (well quieter) time at the old multiplex, as Summer mayhem winds down and the end-of-the-year award bait anxiously awaits. You know… what with Labor Day here in just a couple of weeks. But what’s that rumbling in the distance? Why, it’s another car-smashin’ action flick, charging in with guns ablazin’! Is it another comics-based thriller, or the exciting newest installment of a spy franchise? No, but it’s pretty familiar, as it’s another adrenalin-fueled fable concerning two really different guys, who’ve got to team up to start a huge threat. And, in the tradition of Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours and Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in the Rush Hour trilogy (oops, maybe another’s on the way), these fellas, besides their personalities, are, well, of different ethnicities. Perhaps this film will start a dialogue and help this divided nation.

You really never know what you'll find when you click through your new video-on-demand options. Take a movie like The Colony, for example. Given the film's cast and premise, it could easily be mistaken for a true low-end junkpile that managed to scrape together just enough money for two good actors and some set design. (Free tip: most movies about "dangerous weather!" are really awful.) Fortunately you have websites like FEARnet to help point you in the right direction, home video-wise, and yep, that's another way of saying that the new sci-fi / adventure / horror combo called simply The Colony is actually... pretty good!
We open knee-deep in the middle of a new ice age, and the last remaining groups of humans reside deep underground within gigantic, empty bunkers. Colony 7 is run by Laurence Fishburne, so already this movie is starting off on the right foot. Fishburne's slightly unhinged right hand man is Bill Paxton,...

Four new clips from the Revenge Season 2 finale have been released online, and pose just as many questions as they answer. One thing is abundantly clear: It's about to go Down.
In the first sneak peek from the two-hour episode, we saw Emily and Nolan discover Takeda's body. Now, we see them discussing the New York City-wide blackout and what triggered it.
Is their theory spot on? Or is there more to it? We will soon find out ... it's just a matter of what happens before they do. There's apparently a mysterious German assassin on the loose.
Meanwhile, Jack thinks he's on the cusp of taking down Conrad for good, but may be walking into a trap, and Victoria discovers what she believes is Emily's positive pregnancy test.
The "Truth" comes out Sunday night. Watch the clips below and share your comments:

Filmed 60 stories underground, The Colony is an ice-cold sci-fi thriller starring Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton. Here’s your first look at the official poster and trailer for the film before it hits theaters April 12th.
Such a disquieting preview! Looks like Award-winning director Jeff Renfroe (One Point Zero, Civic Duty) has delivered an action-packed, post-apocalyptic movie with his icy thrill ride.
Set during the next ice-age, an outpost of colonists struggle to survive below the world’s frozen surface. Short on supplies, and plagued by illness and internal conflict, the colonists suspect the worst when they mysteriously lose contact with their only other known settlement, Colony 5. When Colony 7’s leader Briggs (Laurence Fishburne – Contagion, The Matrix Trilogy) decides to lead an expedition to discover what happened, he is challenged by Mason (Bill Paxton – Aliens, Twister), his former comrade-in-arms, who has his own ideas of what is best for the colonists.

About half of Revenge‘s characters take a cross-country trip in this week’s episode, and the mileage they rack up is just slightly smaller than a deductive leap Emily makes toward the end of the hour. Meanwhile, Conrad schmoozes some future constituents, Charlotte sheds her identity and Aiden’s hopes are raised… and then dashed brutally. Let’s take a look at what went down in “Collusion.”

Civic duty comes into play with Julien Leclercq's "The Assault", the new French actioner opening this week. Filmmaking is not a hobby, nor is it broad labor, and one has a responsibility to the truth, both superficially and subtextually. To damn "The Assault" with the accusation of irresonsibility is broad and not entirely civil. It's a blistering cinematic procedural, intense and upsetting in equal measures. And while, superficially, a procedural is "enough," both the art form and the true-life account of what's dramatized in the film demand more.
"The Assault" takes place in the early '90s, with tensions bubbling between Muslim extremists and, we're to gather, the happy home lives of France's Swat-like emergency specialists. We really only get to know Thierry, a distracted father and husband who still hasn't found the way to his daughter's heart; it's suggested this may be due to his complex profession. He's a member of the Gign,...

It’s back to the “Cube” again. Lionsgate is soliciting pitches for “Cube 3D,” according to ShockTillYouDrop. It is not clear on whether the film would be the third part of a complete reboot of the franchise. In the original 1997 science fiction horror “Cube,” the tale is about seven complete strangers with different personalities involuntarily placed into a maze full of deadly traps. The original film was directed by Vincenzo Natali (“Splice,” “Ginger Snaps”). It starred Nicole de Boer (“Stephen King’s Dead Zone,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”), Maurice Dean Wint (“RoboCop: Prime Directives,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) and David Hewlett (“Stargate: Atlantis,” “Splice”). There was also a follow up 2002 sequel called, “Cube 2: Hypercube.” In this version, eight strangers need to escape the “hypercube” and discovered they are in a strange fourth dimension where the laws of physics do not apply. The film was directed by Andrzej Sekula (“The Pleasure Drivers,...

- [Ed's note: Over 3500 pics taken, over 30 capsule reviews and a couple of interviews on the slate – Pierre Alexandre delivered way beyond expectations.] It's already over! Well, it was about time. 13 days for a film festival is totally intense – in addition to the 3 weeks of press screenings prior to the beginning of the festival. So, I ended up seeing about 55 films, which is very little for this festival that had almost 200 features length films. Most of the films were good; unfortunately, as in every festival, there were some very crappy ones. It's hard to understand how in a festival that receives some 2,000 features submissions there still bad films are making their way in the selection. Even the publicist hired by one of the film to promote it said to someone it was a "very bad film" – he didn't say that to the journalists, of course! Despite those few dissappointments, Tribeca 2006 was totally worth it. In doing my top 10 of some festivals I sometimes have a hard time coming up with

NEW YORK -- A compelling psychological thriller that well taps into our current national paranoia about terrorism, Civic Duty offers a powerful performance by Peter Krause as a man who becomes obsessed with his suspicious Islamic neighbor. While the film doesn't fully succeed in its striving for a Hitchcock-style ambiguity in its storytelling, it is consistently engrossing in its exploration of the fine line between civic duty and vigilantism.
Duty recently was showcased at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Krause, who demonstrated in Six Feet Under that he is particularly skillful at conveying the darkness underlying a handsome facade, plays Terry Allen, an accountant with an obvious short fuse who has just lost his job. Reduced to spending his time puttering around at home while sending out resumes, he becomes increasingly suspicious of the young graduate student who has just moved into his apartment complex.
The man in question, Gabe Hassan Khaled Abol Naga), acts in a rather suspicious manner, including taking out his garbage in the middle of the night and receiving visits from a variety of Muslim men. Although his otherwise supportive fiancee (Kari Matchett) is deeply skeptical of his fears, Terry reports his apprehensions to a clearly overworked and disinterested FBI agent (Richard Schiff).
Terry becomes obsessed with proving the man's guilt, at one point even illegally entering his apartment in search of evidence. Eventually, he takes matters into his own hands, leading to a tense and violent showdown with the police.
Andrew Joiner's taut screenplay mainly succeeds in its goal of keeping us guessing as to Gabe's guilt and Terry's sanity. Although it lapses into melodrama towards the end, along the way it provides a harrowingly suspenseful depiction of a situation that has universal implications.
Director Jeff Renfroe provides a superbly modulated tension, especially in his use of camera and editing effects to convey the main character's inner turmoil.
Onscreen nearly every minute, Krause delivers a tour-de-force performance. He is well matched by his charismatic co-star, who must constantly keep us guessing as to whether his character is an innocent victim or a deadly terrorist.

Now covering his second edition, our official festival reporter and multi-function human cyborg will provide us the sights (plenty of cool pics!), the sounds, the reviews and the occasional interviews of the still very young 5th edition of the Tribeca film festival. Below are some of Pierre-Alexandre’s reviews in easy to read, insightful capsule form. Enjoy!] Boy CULTUREBased on the acclaimed novel by Matthew Rettenmund, Q. Allan Brocka's second feature Boy Culture relates the story of mr. X, a very successful hustler, or rather, 'a hustler with morals' as he labels himself. At age 26, and after a 10-year long career that started with his dentist at the time, mr. X is faced with a new complications ... emotions! From the opening credits the style of the film is very sleek and original, while being down-to-earth enough to make us feel uncomfortable as the main character is slowly falling apart and loosing grip on everything he has. The tag line of the film is "Sex pays . Love Cost". More complex than most gay romances that are often based on a guy-meets-guy, guy-loses-guy, guy-gets-back-with-guy schema, Boy Culture has a very complex and multi-faceted narrative that is greatly enhanced by the almost continuous narration of the film.
