An interesting remake of FREAKS that seems to be aimed mostly towards kids
planktonrules22 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The overall rating for this short film is about 2.9 and that makes little sense, as it is a well made short. I can't always understand how IMDb tabulates its ratings, but judging only by the numbers you'd think this one is a bomb of epic proportions.

The film begins with an introduction by Alice Cooper--a fitting choice. The story is about two obnoxious kids who are out trick or treating. When they come to the Sideshow, the older of the two makes some nasty remarks about wanting to come inside to gawk at the freaks! She's 100% tacky and you know that eventually they'll get their comeuppance for their insensitivity--though, oddly, the boy is the target of their wrath even though the girl is clearly more in need of a lesson!

The film is a rather obvious remake of FREAKS--the Tod Browning classic from 1932. Because it is a remake of a great film (probably one of the scariest films ever made), I just can't agree with the review that gives it a 10. An obvious remake should never merit a 10. Now it isn't like the folks who made the film were ripping off FREAKS--it seems more like a homage that was shortened and designed for kids. If most young kids (even today) saw FREAKS, they'd probably need therapy, but this is more like a morality tale in the vein of "Goosebumps". Campy, silly and fun.

The Plot of FREAKSHOW
tedmania17 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Two kids are trick or treating one Halloween, when a man invites them to see his Freak show. The girl refuses, but the man insists her brother go in. She is refused because she is dressed up like a cat. The boy has to Trick or treat to all the freaks in his freak show, and eat as much candy as he can, but he gets sick, and the man says he has to take all his limbs. The girl tries to intervene, but the man says he has to pay the piper. What the man has to do is take all his limbs and turn him into one big lump. However the man says he can take both the kids and they can be his freaks forever. The girl tries to say they both can't stay because she's cute. Only the girl escapes and her brother is put on display as a human pumpkin. This is a modern classic, but it sounds like it would be part of an anthology movie or series.

Enjoyable horror short

Warning: Spoilers
Insensitive Sarah (a perfectly bratty Alissa Dean) and her wimpy brother Joey (solid Sean Whalin) are a couple of obnoxious kids who are out trick or treating on Halloween. The rude duo get more than they bargained for when they sneak into a sideshow attraction at a local carnival in order to check out the freaks inside. Writer/director Marcus Wagner does a sound job of creating and sustaining a suitably creepy ooga booga spookshow atmosphere while paying affectionate homage to Tod Browning's 1932 horror classic "Freaks." The freaks are a genuinely scary and grotesque bunch. Moreover, the nasty and macabre conclusion with Joey being turned into a human pumpkin is truly sick and upsetting. Eric Frandsen delivers a splendidly sinister performance as evil barker Mr. Fingers. Alice Cooper briefly pops up to bookend the short. Both Anthony Hardwick's shadowy cinematography and the shivery score by Jeremy Adelman and Mitch Davis further enhance the overall fleshcrawling mood. Good ghoulish fun.
