Where anything can happen
This is the longest of the four featurettes on the DVD of The Mask, with a running time of about 27 minutes. It consists of interviews(most of them new), behind the scenes footage, clips of the film and frames from the comic books. This is a sort of retroactive making-of, with the crew talking about the process from start to finish. It's interesting that this originated as a graphic novel with a dark tone and high body count, that also had humor, and the wackiness synonymous with the movie. The reason it didn't turn out like that in the end is that director Chuck Russell wanted to focus on the comedy, and that it wound up too similar to the Nightmare on Elm Street series, so they had already gone there before. This goes into casting Carrey, the special effects, the inspirations, the make-up job on the titular character, and the reception that it got when it was released, as well as it's continued popularity. It's well-edited and sharp, and the pacing is great, you're not bored at any point in this. Apart from the drawn violence and disturbing content, there is nothing potentially unpleasant in this. I recommend this to any and all fans of the flick. 7/10
