LONDON -- Sky One said Wednesday that it has picked up free- and pay TV rights to the NBC Universal sci-fi drama Eureka. Due to air on satcaster BSkyB's flagship entertainment channel in the summer, the series follows a community of scientific geniuses working at a top-secret government research establishment nestled in a picturesque hamlet in the Pacific Northwest. Starring Colin Ferguson, Greg Germann and Matt Frewer, the show promises to be somewhere between Twin Peaks and Northern Exposure, according to Sky One head of acquisitions, comedy and drama Davyd Smyth, who said he had purchased it on the strength of the pilot.

Sci Fi Channel has greenlighted an original scripted series to premiere in the summer, the network said Thursday. Eureka, which had already received a pilot order for a two-hour movie last year, will get 11 more one-hour episodes. NBC Universal Television Studio will produce the series for NBC Uni-owned Sci Fi. Eureka concerns a small town in the Pacific Northwest populated by scientists conducting top-secret research for the government. The series will star Colin Ferguson (Coupling), Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Antwone Fisher), Joe Morton (Paycheck), Debrah Farentino (The Division), Maury Chaykin (Being Julia), Matt Frewer (Max Headroom) and Jordan Hinson (Go Figure).
