The film is inspired by Japanese folk singer Ryoko Moriyama's best selling single "Satokibi Batake". The song is about a tragedy during the Battle of Okinawa and the full version is 10 minutes. She has a special appearance as herself in this film.
Yukie Nakama and Joe Odagiri would go on to collaborate again on Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (2005).
Hitomi Kuroki, Yukie Nakama, and Emi Ikehata have all appeared in films related to J-horror classics. Kuroki appeared in Dark Water (2002), based on the Koji Suzuki horror novel. Nakama appeared in Ring 0: Birthday (2000), a prequel to Ringu (1998), also based on a Suzuki novel. Ikehata would go on to appear in The Grudge 3 (2009) a sequel to the American remake of Ju-on: The Grudge (2002).
The film takes place in 1945, shortly before the Battle of Okinawa.
When the film premiered on TBS it received a viewership of 32.2% which means it recorded the highest viewer rating in Japan for a television film at the time.
