New York Comic-Con is a nonstop four day event with a whirlwind of comic book, film, TV and all other forms of entertainment news. The sheet magnitude of covering or hearing about everything seems daunting, so I’ve put together some of the biggest news bits I found while attending the con. Be sure to keep checking back as any other big news bytes start to pour out. For now see below on some of the biggest stories to come out!
-DC started the week with a bang, announcing the creative teams for the "Kamandi Challenge." To celebrate Jack Kirby's 100th birthday in 2017, they randomly paired a writer and an artist, and are telling a 12 issue story that takes Kamandi (The Last Boy on Earth!) around the globe. Some of the highlights from the announced list of creators are Walt Simonson, Dale Eaglesham and Kevin Eastman!

Daredevil, Preacher, Supergirl... Lost track of the zillions of comic book shows to grace our televisions from 2015? Here's our cheat sheet.
It’s a wonderful time to be a TV-binging comic book fan. In fact, if you were a little tactical about your viewing habits (and not too fussy in your Marvel/DC preference), we’re approaching a state where you could probably fill an ‘all the soap operas’ shaped hole in your schedule every day with the stuff of capes, cowls and crime-fighting.
Of course, we already have Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, The Walking Dead and – for now – Constantine gracing our schedules. Of those, Arrow, The Flash and The Walking Dead have already been picked up for further seasons, as well. With the exception of Constantine, we wouldn’t be too surprised to hear the rest renewed too.
The fun doesn’t stop there.

Fox’s new Batman prequel series, Gotham may be generating some mixed critical reactions, but the show is a huge ratings hit, so it was frankly only a matter of time before the studio poured over another pile of DC Comics and ordered an additional television adaptation.
It comes as no surprise then that Fox has done just that, though the new show of choice is a bit unexpected. According to Deadline, Fox has ordered a pilot for the Warren Ellis-penned comic series Global Frequency, which ran for twelve issues between 2002 and 2004. Unlike more serialized comic book stories, Global Frequency centered on single-issue, standalone tales. The story focused on an independent, covert intelligence organization, led by a woman using the alias Miranda Zero. Deadline describes the show’s approach to the story as follows:

Warner Bros. and producer, Jerry Bruckheimer (best known for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, and the U.S. version of The Amazing Race), are taking on the DC Entertainment property titled Global Frequency, a comic book series written by Warren Ellis. The high-profile television project which has landed a pilot production commitment at Fox will be written by respected sci-fi writer Rockne S. O’Bannon (Farscape and Defiance creator)
Deadline reports the news on the project, saying “The show will chronicle the workings of The Global Frequency, a privately funded crime-fighting operation that uses worldwide crowd-sourcing to solve crimes the police cannot.”
Bruckheimer is joining fellow Wbtv A-list producer Greg Berlanti, who is behind a number of DC-themed projects including Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl as well as the upcoming Riverdale, based on the Archie Comics characters.

The Warren Ellis-penned comic book series Global Frequency is getting its third shot at television. Deadline is reporting Fox has ordered a pilot for a new TV drama based on the Warren Ellis (Red, Transmetropolitan) sci-fi comic series Global Frequency. If this sounds a little familiar it's because back in 2005 Mark Burnett (Survivor) produced a pilot based on the comic for The WB, but it never aired (although it was leaked online) and wasn't picked up by the network. This time around it'll be Jerry Bruckheimer producing the Global Frequency series, as well as...

Warren Ellis’ Global Frequency graphic novel is becoming a Warner Bros TV show…
Telly shows adapted from comics have gone from having a touch of outsider status to becoming the hottest programmes on TV. Until the massive wave of film-to-tv projects hits, comic books are the biggest telly trend we’ve got.
Interestingly though, Warner Bros is beginning to hedge its bets in the less-well-known corners of the comic book world. It will adapt Warren Ellis’ Global Frequency, a graphic novel from DC Comics’ riskier Vertigo imprint.
The show will focus on The Global Frequency, a privately-funded crime-fighting syndicate who, as you might have deduced, have agents all over the globe. Spearheading the production is the incredibly experienced Jerry Bruckheimer, with no less than four other executive producers (including Mr Ellis) on board as well.

Following their success with "Gotham," Fox and Warner Bros. Television are re-teaming for "Global Frequency," another DC Comics series adaptation which Jerry Bruckheimer will executive produce.
A pilot production commitment has been handed out for the show which will chronicle the inner workings of an organization known as The Global Frequency, a privatized crime-fighting unit that receives funding from around the world to solve the crimes that the police cannot.
"Farscape" creator Rockne S. O'Bannon is penning the pilot script based on "Red" creator Warren Ellis' twelve-issue limited comic book series. The pair, Bruckheimer, and Jonathan Littman will all executive produce.
This will mark the third attempt at a TV series based on the property following a failed pilot in 2005 starring Michelle Forbes and Josh Hopkins, and a version on The CW in 2009 that only made it to script stage.

While they clearly have enormous plans for the cinema, Warner Bros. are continuing to plunder their DC comics catalogue for TV projects too. Like Gotham, one of their next major projects will be set up for the Fox channel. Jerry Bruckheimer will executive produce Global Frequency, based on the Wildstorm / Vertigo comics by Warren Ellis. Rockne S. O'Bannon (Farscape, Defiance) will be the principal writer. The comics revolve around a covert intelligence agency headed by the pseudonymous agent Miranda Zero. Independent, accountable to no-one, crowd-sourced and funded by mysterious benefactors, the agency's purpose is to guard against and tackle various worldwide secret government initiatives that may threaten the public at large. Agents are unknown even to each other until they're placed on assigments together, and the cases they face range from the paramilitary to the paranormal. There was actually a TV pilot once before in 2005, overseen by reality TV mogul...

According to Deadline, Fox has committed to producing a pilot to another DC Comics-inspired property. "Global Frequency," based on the 12-issue mini-series of the same name published by DC Comics' Wildstorm Publications, centers around a secret global organization that solves crimes by enlisting the services of 1,001 operatives. It was created by comic book writer Warren Ellis ("Red"), who will also be an executive produder for the show, along with Jerry Bruckheimer, Rockne S. O'Bannon and Jonathan Littman. O'Bannon, the creator of Farscape and Defiance, will be writing the pilot. If this feels like deja vu, it's because in 2005 Survivor producer, Mark Burnett, produced a pilot based on Global Frequency. It never aired. Though, it did leak online. You can view it below. The "Global Frequency" TV series is a project that refuses to die. Based on the Warren Ellis comic of the same name, the show first came to light nearly 10 years ago on the CW with Michelle Forbes and Josh Hopkins in starring roles and though a pilot was shot and shown around to a handful of folks, the show was scrapped leaving fans who hadn't even seen it shaking their heads.
A bootleg screener of the pilot started making the rounds, and I think eventually was even aired as a TV movie or special of some sort, and when people did finally see it, no one could really figure out why the show had been passed over. I’m sort of technically on holiday this week after moving house and starting a new job (y’know, one that doesn’t involve free comics and lets me buy luxuries like bread and loo roll) last week, which is why things have been a little behind with this column. My contribution’s a round-up session for the most part, though as you’ll see I got a bit carried away with The Wake. Why aren’t you reading that book yet, btw?

Many who have seen the rejected pilot for Global Frequency have wondered why it was never picked up as a series. Having just watched it, I think I can cite one very good reason.
First, some background. Like many readers of graphic novels, I am a big fan of the work of Warren Ellis. In particular, I enjoyed his 2002 limited-run series Global Frequency , which reads like a post-modern reinvention of Mission: Impossible. Though I’ve had a DVD bootleg of the WB’s 2004 TV-series pilot for Global Frequency sitting on my shelf for a few years, I didn’t get around to actually watching it until a few nights ago (completely unaware that, following the successful feature adaptation of Ellis’s R.E.D., a new pilot for Global Frequency is underway).

Cully got to visit the set in warm and wonderful New Orleans. They liked Cully. Cully's a clever artist what draws the pretty pictures. Me? I got sent to Toronto in the middle of their worst winter in years. They were building shelters for the homeless out of frozen hipsters on Yonge Street, and my hotel was on full-on ice-zombie lockdown.
I'm not fond of Toronto, and I hope that when my friend Steve Murray becomes Mayor of that benighted town, the executions are both rapid and significant.

During this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, I had the chance to sit down with "Red" creators Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner to discuss the upcoming film based on their comic book series, as well as various other projects each creator has in the works. Among those projects is "Gravel," the upcoming film based on Ellis' comic with artist Mike Wolfer, published by Avatar Press.
Announced back in October, the "Gravel" movie will get a first draft of its screenplay by Ellis himself, who will also serve as executive producer on the film for "Superman Returns" studio Legendary Pictures. The celebrated writer offered MTV News a brief update on the status of the film, as well as that of "Global Frequency," a television series based on one of his popular comics.

In Red, Bruce Willis plays a retired CIA agent, Frank Moses, who can't adjust to life as a civilian, similar to the character he played in The Whole Nine Yards and the sequel, The Whole Ten Yards. Another former CIA agent, Victoria (Helen Mirren), offsets domestic duties with contract kills. Yet another agent, Joe Matheson (Morgan Freeman), has retired to a nursing home. This funny trailer (via Yahoo Movies!) for Red is attached to the print of Knight And Day. We caught it at Saturday’s night preview and everyone in the audience got a real kick out of it too!
Synopsis:
Red is the story of Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, who is now living a quiet life. That is, until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Freeman, Malkovich and Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive.
Ok. So now that you’ve seen the trailer, here’s what the author of the graphic novel, Warren Ellis, had to say over on his blog back in December. (Cully Hamner is the co-creator of Red).
First off: Red, the book, is 66 pages long.

Last we heard, Guy Ritchie was in the process of freeing up his schedule to focus completely on Sherlock Holmes 2 [1], but it appears that Warner Brothers loves the guy so much that they simply can't help throwing more cool projects his way. Pajiba [2] received a tip this week indicating that Ritchie is interested in getting away from all the crime flicks to take on something a little more fantastical. Something like... a new take on Excalibur perhaps? Unlike Bryan Singer's previously announced remake [3] of John Boorman's 1981 film Excalibur (which is also at Warner Brothers), Ritchie is reportedly in talks to direct a King Arthur movie based on a treatment by comic book writer Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Global Frequency). It's being produced by Hollywood Gang (the same people who did 300), and as Ellis revealed on his blog [4], it "differs from the prior 751 King Arthur movies in many ways, but...

We already knew that multi-talented artist RZA was writing and directing a martial arts genre mash-up titled Iron Fist. Earlier this week, we brought you the news that producers Don Murphy ("We3") and John Wells had renewed their option on Jareth Grealish and Evan Young’s “The Forgotten” comic book. Grealish hinted that a "well-established screenwriter" was attached to the project, and it hasn't taken long for the first rumor to surface regarding who that writer could be.
According to SlashFilm, "Transformers" writer John Rogers will pen the screenplay for the film, which adapts the 2002 four-issue miniseries about a man with the ability to make those around him forget that he ever existed as he attempts to unravel a murder mystery.
If the rumor proves true, Rogers will add "The Forgotten" to a resume already stacked with comics projects and comics-related work. I’ve read a lot of Warren Ellis’ comic book work, but I’ve never read his “Global Frequency”. Initially I thought this was the comic series “Planetary”, but apparently they are two separate works. In “Frequency”, a woman name Miranda Zero leads a covert unit made up of exactly 1,001 operatives around the world, and their mission is to stop world-threatening situations before the public knows about it. Ellis apparently fashioned the series as a series of single, stand-alone issues, much like a TV show. Warner Bros. tried to adapt the comic into a TV series back in 2005, when the channel was still called WB. Fast-forward to 2009, and the WB is now the CW, and they’re once again looking at a “Global Frequency” series. Warren Ellis' "Global Frequency" is making another run at the small screen, as The CW Network is allegedly trying to adapt the comic book series once again.
According to Production Weekly's Twitter feed, a second adaptation of "Global Frequency" is in the works courtesy of The CW and writer Scott Nimerfro. The news was further touched upon by Ellis himself, who wrote on his personal website that he hadn't "been cleared to comment yet" by the network.
"Shouldn't say any more until I get the nod from the studio," said Ellis. "But yes."
For some context, "Global Frequency" was previously attempted as a television series for The WB Network — the initial form of The CW — back in 2005. The project went as far as the pilot phase, with "True Blood" and "Battlestar Galactica" actress Michelle Forbes assuming the role of Miranda Zero, the leader of the Global Frequency, an organization...
"But yes."

Global Frequency, the DC/Wildstorm comic, might be back in play as a TV series.
You may remember that in 2005, Mark Burnett (producer of Survivor) and John Rogers (who would go on to write the comic Blue Beetle and create the show Leverage) created a pilot for the WB. The pilot wasn't picked up; however, it got leaked to the Interwebs and became the most watched pilot that never got picked up.
Now the industry magazine Production Weekly has just posted the following on Twitter: The CW will again try to adapt Warren Ellis' comic book "Global Frequency," this time Scott Nimerfro will script the pilot. Scott Nimerfro has written for Star Trek: Voyager, Tales From The Crypt, Perversions Of Science, The Outer Limits, Stargate: Atlantis, and Pushing Daisies, and was an associate producer on the X-Men movie.

Since his comic book debut in 1990, Warren Ellis has been one of the most prolific writers in the comic industry with dozens of original creations in addition to several books for Marvel and DC.
Following the recent announcement that “Black Summer” was optioned by Vigilante Entertainment in addition to the upcoming film adaptations of his “Red” and “Gravel” series, it seems clear that Ellis has become an in-demand comic creator in Hollywood.
With an eye toward more of Ellis' work finding its way to the big (or small) screen, here are five of his projects that would also make excellent films or TV series.
Freakangels: Recently featured in our weekly "Adapt This" feature, Ellis and artist Paul Duffield's “FreakAngels” webcomic follows a group of telepaths in London rebuilding their world after a major disaster—a disaster they had a part in causing.

The Comics Reporter: More staffers leaving Wizard?
Warren Ellis on the genesis of Global Frequency:
I defined Global Frequency from the start as Rescue Fiction. if not explicitly Post-9/11 Rescue Fiction. Because Thunderbirds is the anti-Superman. Now, I just woke up, so it’s okay if that doesn’t make sense. But immediately after 9/11 I found people on message boards Actually Saying Out Loud that they wished Superman were real because he would have saved the Wtc. And that is an anti-evolutionary wish. What you say is, I wish the dozen or so people who knew this was going to happen could have informed someone who...

Blue Beetle writer John Rogers has created and will executive produce Leverage for TNT. The other executive producers include Dean Devlin (Independence Day) and Chris Downey (The King of Queens) for Electric Entertainment.
According to a studio press release, “As a former stand-up comic with a degree in Physics, Rogers uses subtle comedy, high-tech gadgetry, movie-like theatrics and superhero talents in each of his scripts for Leverage. The up-and-coming ensemble cast, led by Academy Award Winner, Timothy Hutton, brings Rogers’ words and storylines to life. This caper show follows a team of thieves, grifters and hackers who act as modern-day Robin Hoods, using their specialized talents to steal from the rich and give back to the regular guys. Much like the thrilling twists and turns found in Blue Beetle and Transformers, Leverage offers high-octane energy with every heist!”
The series will also star Gina Bellman (Jekyll), Christian Kane (Angel), Beth Riesgraf...
