More "History and Memory," another personal perspective
Polaris_DiB1 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
In "The Future is Behind You", director Abigail Child takes some found footage of a Jewish family reunion/vacation and re-edits it with a voice-over about the events leading up to the Holocaust for Jews in Germany: their perceptions, their confusion, and in some cases their ignorance. It's a moody and dark piece (of course), but it offers poetry and music to create a sense of what has been lost or maybe forgotten.

In the range of many experimental features, especially ones dealing topically with Holocaust imagery, it stands out primarily as a personal piece or an experiment in expression over any new formal elements or themes. It is able to bypass clichés entirely with a sense of personal evaluation into the very nature of the images that have been chosen and edited.
