Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Oscar-winner Robert Duvall has starred in dozens of films spanning a 60+ year career, racking up six additional nominations in the process, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Duvall made his big screen debut with the small but memorable role of Boo Radley in “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962), released when he was 31-years-old. His first Oscar nomination came just 10 years later: Best Supporting Actor for Francis Ford Coppola‘s mob classic “The Godfather” (1972).
It would take 11 years before Duvall finally clinched that elusive Best Actor Oscar for “Tender Mercies” (1983), a small-scale drama about a drunken country-western singer working towards redemption. He would compete five additional times: lead for “The Great Santini” (1980) and “The Apostle” (1997); supporting for “Apocalypse Now” (1979), “A Civil Action” (1998), and “The Judge” (2014).

In a country where women’s freedoms have historically been marginalized (a nationwide ban on female drivers was only lifted five years ago), new Mbc Studios boss Christina Wayne is determined to seek out the strongest female creative voices Saudi Arabia has to offer.
In her first major interview since replacing Peter Smith in February, American producer Wayne, who shepherded Mad Men and Breaking Bad for AMC Networks, tells Deadline how the Riyadh-based media giant is encouraging work from “across all genders” but lasering in on new female talent.
“We have lots of amazing female writers and directors in the region who are bringing us fabulous stories,” she says. “There are book series here with fanbases that are young and female, and they are surprisingly interested in fantasy and sci-fi.”

Since making his screen debut at age eight opposite his father, Lloyd Bridges, on TV’s “Sea Hunt,” Jeff Bridges has enjoyed an acting career that now spans a whopping 65 years. His resume mainly consists of film roles, but he has occasionally ventured back to the small screen, most recently as the star of “The Old Man.” Having already picked up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his performance on the FX series, he is naturally one of the strongest contenders for this year’s Best Drama Actor Emmy. If his likely bid results in a victory, the Best Actor Oscar winner will join a distinguished group of leading men who were lauded by the film and then TV academies.

At 80 years old, Walter Hill shows no signs of slowing down. The veteran director of influential action thrillers like “The Warriors,” “48 Hrs.,” and “Streets of Fire” has reinvented himself in recent years as a reliable gun-for-hire on prestige TV Westerns and crime movies like “Bullet to the Head” and “The Assignment” that fall somewhere between VOD schlock and ‘70s grindhouse revivalism.

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks is the actor you want to receive the 2023 SAG life achievement award. He had 26.77 of the votes in our recent poll asking which male actor should have the honor from the Screen Actors Guild. Hanks was ahead of Anthony Hopkins at 11.19 and then a tie between Robert Duvall and Dustin Hoffman at 9.13.
We also created a separate poll recently for actresses, which had Glenn Close winning and Meryl Streep in second place. All actors and actresses in each poll have two things in common with typical decisions by this committee: at least 65 years old with a history of charitable and/or humanitarian works.

There’s someone new on the horizon…and that someone is Thomas Haden Church. Church has signed on to co-star in Kevin Costner’s latest, Horizon.
News on the cast of Costner’s long-awaited western has been coming in quite steadily. Earlier this month, with Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and Luke Wilson all inked contracts before Thomas Haden Church.
Horizon will be Kevin Costner’s fourth film as director, following 1990’s Dances with Wolves, 1997’s The Postman and 2003’s Open Range. Costner, it seems, is taking that number quite literally. For his latest endeavor, Costner wants to go epic, churning out “four different movies.”
“They’re going to get to see it the way I intended it to be seen. It will eventually be cut up into [hour-long episodes] or 42 minutes…But their first viewing of it will be as four 2 hour and 45-minute movies. And every three months, one will come out.

The “Twisted Metal” series at Peacock has cast Thomas Haden Church.
Church will star opposite previously announced series leads Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz. The show is described as a half-hour action comedy based on the Playstation video games of the same name.

Tom Hanks was the first person to ever receive a leading actor award from the Screen Actors Guild back in 1995. And now you have voted him your top choice to receive the life achievement at the SAG Awards on February 27, 2022. He was far ahead with 33.58% in our recent poll asking which male actor should get this honor. Sir Anthony Hopkins is at 14.34% and Al Pacino gets 13.21% as the only other people in double digits.
The SAG-AFTRA selection committee will likely be announcing their recipient in the near future. Since three men in a row have been selected for 2018, 2019 and 2020, we fully expect a woman to be chosen this time. In fact, we already published an actress poll last week which was won by Barbra Streisand, closely followed by Meryl Streep (see full results here).

The series, which Variety exclusively reported was in development back in January, is innspired by the long-running Texas Monthly column of the same name. It centers on Dave (Church), an opinionated Austin-area radio show host who calls ‘em like he sees ‘em, dispensing advice to Texas natives and newcomers, alike, on what he knows to be the true Texas Way of life. But the Texas Way is changing, and now Dave’s job is becoming much more complicated. Listening to advice from his wife, family and co-workers, Dave must now become the arbiter of which changes to embrace and which to reject, possibly opening his mind in the process.
Should the project go to series, it would mark a return to multi-cam broadcast comedy for Church, who broke out during his...

While it looks like the Emmy race for Best Drama Directing will come down to a battle royal between three “Game of Thrones” contenders, there’s actually a sizable spoiler lurking in the wings: Adam McKay, who’s nominated for HBO’s new series “Succession.” The TV academy loves to reward A-list movie directors, especially ones who’ve been on a role as of late. So while our odds may say “Thrones” is primed to take its third victory in the category (it previously won in 2015 and 2016), perhaps they shouldn’t celebrate too soon.
After carving out a niche for himself with the absurdist comedies “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004) and “Step Brothers” (2008), McKay won critical acclaim and Oscar glory with the politically charged satires “The Big Short” (2015) and “Vice” (2018). Though it may seem like a slam-dunk for “Game of Thrones,” the Emmy race for Best Drama Directing could have an interesting spoiler in the mix: Adam McKay, who’s in the running this year for HBO’s new series “Succession.” The TV academy loves to heap accolades on A-list movie directors, especially ones who’ve been on a role as of late.

The former brought him a win for screenwriting and a nomination for directing, while the latter earned him writing, directing and producing bids. Now he’s returned to television with this pertinent drama about a Rupert Murdoch-esque media mogul (Brian Cox) and his conniving family, for which he helmed the pilot.

Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges, Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Ian McShane, Ed Harris, Chris Cooper — all these performers are part of a vanishing breed of actor who can pull off being a cowboy in movies and on TV.
But could they be believable as a modern-day rancher protecting his family’s Montana cattle ranch that is the size of Rhode Island from being encroached upon by lumber companies, oil drillers, home builders, Native American casino interests and others looking to make a killing by destroying nature in the raw.
There is one actor who has the giddy-up to play such a nuanced patriarch and not devolve into a J.R. Ewing caricature and that is Kevin Costner. He’s proven that on the Paramount Network’s popular neo-Western “Yellowstone” as the head of the Dutton clan on a spread where you are just as likely to bump into a designer-suited...

Robert Duvall celebrates his 88th birthday on January 5, 2019. The Oscar-winning actor has starred in dozens of films spanning a nearly 60 year career, racking up six additional nominations in the process, and is currently in theaters now with “Widows.” But how many of those titles are classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

This year’s Emmy race for Best Drama Directing is shaping up to be a battle royale between two defending champs that have yet to go head-to-head: “Game of Thrones” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” But there’s another past winner waiting in the wings: David Fincher, who’s in the running this year for his Netflix series “Mindhunter.” The TV academy often loves to shower well-known film directors with accolades, as Fincher himself has proven before.
The two-time Oscar nominee (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” in 2008 and “The Social Network” in 2010) followed his big-screen successes by winning an Emmy for directing the pilot of “House of Cards” (2013). Now he has returned to the small screen with “Mindhunter,” a serial killer drama about FBI criminal psychologists studying the minds of murderers. Is AMC’s limited series “The Terror,” based on Dan Simmons‘ best-selling novel about a lost expedition to the Arctic in the 1840s, being underestimated by our Emmy Experts? As of this writing only one pundit — Ben Travers (Indiewire) — predicts that the haunting program will become the cable network’s third Best Limited Series Emmy nominee after “The Night Manager” (2016) and “Broken Trail” (2007). But don’t forget, the Emmys have a love affair with AMC shows.

For networks hungry to break into the Emmy race, it sometimes takes just one show.
FX did it in 2002 with cop classic “The Shield,” AMC made it in 2007 with the Western miniseries “Broken Trail” and Netflix swung the door open for streaming services in 2013 with the political drama “House of Cards.” From there, those networks became Emmy titans.
“At a time when basic cable wasn’t considered to be of that quality, it was extremely gratifying,” “The Shield” creator Shawn Ryan said of the show’s big first-season nominations (and win– for star Michael Chiklis) 15 years ago. “Not knowing if anyone would take anything on FX seriously, to get that kind of validation was a career-making memory.”
This year, several more networks are looking to make a splash on Emmy night, entering the competition in a big way with big, signature programs that have captured the attention of Television Academy voters.

Over the last few years, Netflix has arguably done more to change the way we watch, talk, and think about television than anyone since HBO in the turn of the century days of "The Sopranos," "Sex and the City," and "Six Feet Under." Between their library of titles licensed from more traditional TV operations and their ever-growing stable of original series, Netflix has conditioned viewers to binge-watch shows, has encouraged its creators to design shows made explicitly for that model, and has pushed television in general into a more serialized direction, since the most lucrative afterlife for many shows lies in being sold to a streaming service rather than into traditional rerun syndication. During an appearance at the TCA press tour earlier this month, Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that the service would be offering over 600 hours of original content this year, and spending over $6 billion to...

Songs On Screen: All week HitFix will be featuring tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out all the entries in the series here. When we talk about underrated directors, it's hard not to mention Walter Hill. Hill is an underrated director, the way Michael Ritchie and Peter Yates were underrated directors, the way Roger Donaldson, Joe Dante, and Fred Schepisi are underrated directors. They’re all underrated because it’s only when you look at their filmographies that the numbers start to total up and you realize, boy, he directed a lot of really good movies. In Hill’s case, that list includes "The Warriors," "48 Hours," "The Long Riders," "Southern Comfort,: "Hard Times," "Trespass," and "Wild Bill." Some great. Some solid. (My personal favorite of those is Hard Times, a pulpy film about bare-knuckle boxers in the Great Depression.) There were clunkers...

Walter Hill's reputation as a masterly director of existential thrillers and westerns is secure, though apart from co-producing Prometheus, his important work this century has been for TV, notably the style-setting pilot for Deadwood and the western mini-series Broken Trail.
Based on a French graphic novel, Bullet to the Head takes him back to New Orleans and settings and themes he explored to greater effect in Hard Times, Southern Comfort and Johnny Handsome. It's a moderately entertaining buddy movie in which a Korean-American cop from New York joins forces with ageing hitman Sylvester Stallone to pursue some local cops, but Alessandro Camon's script is indifferent, and Stallone's characteristic combination of preening posturing and gruff self-pity makes him an unsuitable Hill hero. Over 30 years ago, Stallone passed on appearing in two of Hill's early masterworks, The Driver and 48 Hrs. Hill and his admirers should count themselves fortunate.
