Radio with Pictures
This is the first cartoon directed (uncredited) by Gene Deitch, the Angry Young Man of Animation. He seems to have been angry mostly over his lack of budgets and in this movie for the Jam Handy Organization, we can see why: this movie flacking planes for the Air Force is a radio script with pictures. Even the animation is minimal. Figures move, but not limbs. UPA, where Deitch got his training, tried to make to make a virtue of the necessity imposed by poverty, but with Deitch it always appeared to be angry defiance. I wouldn't take a decent budget if you offered it to me! he seemed to be saying. Not that anyone ever did.
The script, after seeming to promise something by having Roger Windsock grow wings, ignores them. Instead, we are treated to a list of peaceful uses for air planes, including fire fighting, pest control and high-speed transportation. However, air flight is about more than air flight. In the post-war world, it is about jobs! All of this is done with defiantly ugly animation. Except that it was probably intended to be shown as part of a movie program, they would have been better off not bothering to put pictures up there. Even as it is, I don't think they add anything to the proceedings.
