With a bassy voice and over a minimalist syncopated beat, Wilfredo "Willy" Aldarondo sings of lament. "The love of my life left for New York / my mom followed my aunt, to Florida they went/packing my bags, it's my turn now / the plane landed, and no one clapped."
These are the opening lines of "Tierra," the leading single off the Puerto Rican band Chuwi's newest EP of the same title. Founded in 2020 in the northwestern coastal town of Isabela, Chuwi is composed of Willy, his sister Lorén Aldarondo, his brother Wester Aldarondo, and friend Adrián López. Describing the band's sound is a challenge in and of itself. Are they Latin jazz, indie rock, urbano, tropical fusion, or something else altogether? The answer to all of those questions is "yes."

For the third weekend in a row, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is coming out on top at the box office, with Universal's animated Nintendo adaptation showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. The movie will absolutely hit $1 billion globally now as a matter of when, not if, and soon. But as impressive as that movie's run continues to be (we'll get into that more in a second) this past weekend's big newcomer was "Evil Dead Rise." While the fifth entry in the long-running horror franchise was never truly going to compete for the crown, it exceeded expectations and all but ensured that the series won't stay dead for another decade this time around.
According to The Numbers, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" topped the charts with a third-weekend haul of $59.9 million. That represents a mere 35 percent drop week-to-week, signaling just how starved moviegoers were for a family-friendly film.

It's an all-British affair on the Empire Podcast this week, as we finally get a chance to bring you the interview Chris Hewitt did with Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre director/star combo, Guy Ritchie and The 'Jason Statham' Stath over a year ago, before the film's release was delayed. Now it's out on Prime Video, here's the perfect chance to hear the duo talk about working together over the years, and Ritchie's unique approach to choreographing action sequences. Then, in an interview that hasn't been locked away in a vault for over a year, Chris sits down with Nicholas Hoult, returning to the pod after a four year break to talk about playing the title role in Renfield, fizzy water, his approach to choosing roles, and whether or not he has a Draclier in him. Ooer missus and no mistake.

At least half of European Netflix and Amazon Prime subs’ viewing time could be spent watching non-English language content by 2030, according to leading analytics firm Digital-i.
The firm’s latest report raised fears of a “devaluation of U.S. and UK productions” if the trend continues moving at this swift pace, having more-than doubled since 2019.
Using its newly-developed SoDa streamer measurement system, Digital-i found that viewers from the major European territories spent 22% of their time watching non-English language content in October 2021 compared with 10% two years prior. Across the same period, the percentage of non-English language shows in Netflix’s catalogue increased from 25% to 31%. Viewing to Amazon’s non-English shows doubled to 16% over the period, while its catalogue increased from 19% to 25%.
October 2021 saw Squid Game dominating but French drama Lupin (pictured) and older but nonetheless popular offerings such as Money Heist and Dark were also flagged as driving the change.

The trials and tribulations of the students at Las Encinas will continue to be charted at Netflix.
The streamer on Thursday officially ordered a fifth season of the Spanish-language drama Elite, well in advance of its Season 4 premiere.
Netflix made the announcement on Twitter, but Deadline revealed that the fifth season will also bring another two new cast members into the fold in Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas), but no character details were revealed.
Elite typically likes to keep viewers in suspense when new additions are announced due to the nature of the series.
Each season follows a new mystery in a similar vein to Big Little Lies, with the characters being quizzed by the police about the events.
Elite was renewed for Season 4 in May last year, but production was scuppered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the series finishing filming much later than originally planned.

Lee Daniels’ biopic on Holiday charts the tumultuous legal battle in which she became the target of an undercover narcotics sting operation led by Jimmy Fletcher, the man with whom she had an affair. “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” named after the 1947 court case against her, is inspired by the singer’s life story and her struggles with addiction, fame and heartbreak.
Though it was originally meant to be a theatrical release from Paramount, Hulu has officially acquired the U.S. rights to the film. The first trailer dropped on Monday...

If there’s ever a Hall of Fame for climate scientists, Michael Mann will be among the first to be inducted. More than 20 years ago, Mann — now a distinguished professor of atmospheric science at Penn State, as well the director of the university’s Earth Systems Science Center — co-authored a paper that proved that the 1990s had been the northern hemisphere’s warmest decade in the past 1,000 years. It was an ingenious bit of science, using tree rings, ice cores, and coral to measure past climates. But what really grabbed...

Hit Scandinavian crime drama The Investigation, from A War and Mindhunter director Tobias Lindholm, is getting a U.S. airing after HBO acquired the limited series.
The premium cable network has bought the linear and streaming rights to the six-part series, which comes from Miso Film, the Danish production company owned by Fremantle.
The Investigation explores the case of the 2017 murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, who was killed after boarding a homemade submarine. The case was one of the most notorious in Denmark’s history and made international headlines after Wall’s body parts were found in different locations and the owner of the submarine Peter Madsen was charged and convicted of her murder.
The series follows Jens Møller, played by A Hijacking’s Søren Malling, the Head of Homicide, and his team in the pursuit of the truth. With the hope of being able to provide the prosecutor,...

“Wonder Woman 1984” used its lasso of truth to rope in a modest $5.5 million over the New Year’s holiday. The sequel also ensnared another $10.1 million from overseas markets, bringing its global total to a ho-hum $118.5 million.
Wonder Woman may be an iconic comic book character, but the film’s lackluster results aren’t that surprising given how severely coronavirus has upended the movie business. However, the weekend’s domestic grosses do represent a steep decline, signaling waning interest from fans, and are a far cry from the box office returns of pre-pandemic blockbusters. Stateside, “Wonder Woman 1984,” which is being released by Warner Bros., has earned $28.5 million.
The superhero sequel, which is currently suffering some social media backlash for not rising to the level of its beloved predecessor, is being simultaneously released on HBO Max in a bid to bolster the WarnerMedia streaming service and as a concession to...

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. DC Comics released a first look at its March comics, the first batch after the end of the multiverse-spanning Dark Nights: Death Metal and the pause-everything company wide reset Future State, and from our first glimpse of the solicitations, the big changes coming in Future State look like they might be sticking around.
With the sheer volume of change that DC underwent in the last year – new distributors, new release days, personnel changes, cancellations and FanDomes included – there was a lot of speculation about the future of the comics line. This first batch of solicitations provide an interesting answer to that speculation. It looks like, post-Future State, DC’s changing everything. By keeping some things the same.
Here are our biggest takeaways…

With Galactus vanquished and Apollo Island saved, Fortnite‘s native population has waved a fond farewell to Marvel’s retinue of beloved superheroes and embarked on an all-new adventure. Kicking off last week following a short period of server downtime, Season 5 picks up where Nexus War left off, with the Zero Point device, now unstable thanks to Galactus’ interference, requiring drastic action in order to restore peace to the island once more.
Why that situation would necessitate the recruitment of skilled hunters from across all reality isn’t yet known, though that’s exactly what Jones has been tasked with doing. We imagine that all will become clear as the weeks progress, but for now, the hiring process is still underway.
As you’ll no doubt be aware of, the Mandalorian is already present and accounted for, and he’s soon going to be accompanied by an incredibly angry man.

In case you hadn’t heard, the outcome of Fortnite‘s high stakes Nexus War has finally been decided.
Earlier this week, Marvel supervillain Galactus made his debut, hungry and incredibly eager to harness the power of Apollo Island’s mysterious Zero Point. The device, bursting with untold energy (the perfect snack for a planet-sized cosmic entity), ultimately ended up staying exactly where it belongs thanks to the combined efforts of Iron Man, Thor and a host of other heroes, with gamers themselves ultimately playing the most important role in repelling the world eater’s assault.
And now that Chapter 2 – Season 5 has arrived to take its predecessor’s place, Marvel has seen fit to share a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part in the collaboration, though not before first signing off with the ominous “see you again soon!”

New Works Provincetown has commissioned its second and third projects. The developmental theater lab will help support a new play by Kevin Powell (“The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood”), developed with and directed by Oliver Butler (“What the Constitution Means to Me”). “Maiden Voyage” is inspired by the true story of the 1989-1990 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, in which the first ever all-female sailing team battled sexism to complete a grueling endurance test. This story was also chronicled in the recent, acclaimed documentary “Maiden.”
