- Stu is hired to find a missing girl in Italy. He encounters his driver from when he was in the war. He also befriends a local boy that offers to help in the task. The locals are not very helpful. The full picture is not clear, but the missing girl is related to an ongoing crime. Eventually the crime is found out.
- Rather than go directly back to Los Angeles as was the plan after what ends up being a more personal than work trip to Paris, Stuart instead heads to Rome as wealthy southern belle Delphine De Janville, now ensconced as a Parisienne by marriage, albeit the latest unhappy one to yet another gold-digger, hires him to locate her niece, Audrey Kenniston, who no one has seen or heard from since she landed in the Eternal City. Stuart's first stop in Rome is to the pensione where Audrey apparently lived, her Plain Jane roommate, Julia Maltby, who is less than cooperative in her evasiveness. Thirteen year old Guido Orsini, a neighborhood street urchin, tells Stuart that he can help locate Audrey, he who doesn't know her personally but who "hears" things on the street. Stuart's encounters with Guido lead to him meeting Marta, whose building across the street from the pensione is being torn down, and her constant brusque companion, Sebastian, the two who seem too interested in him not to be involved with the missing Audrey. Stuart also runs into an old colleague by chance, Johnny Manetti, Stuart's driver during his days in the OSS. Things within this situation are not all they appear on the surface, including Julia's identity, Johnny being in the neighborhood by chance and the nature of the demolition site.—Huggo
