What a jerk!
planktonrules13 April 2021
Ray Marchand is married to Gladys, a woman much older than him and a woman who he clearly doesn't love. So why did he marry her? Money...it seems that Gladys is loaded! And, Gladys realizes he has eyes for other women...and reminds him that his gravy train will end if he does anything more than look. Well, this is put into jeopardy when Ray meets Nyla (Anne Francis)...a woman whose youth and good looks activates Ray's hormones! What's next? Watch the episode.

This is a very good episode and this is because of the nice twist at the end. Well worth seeing...and it's nice to see Ray get more than he bargained for in this show.

By the way, when his wife refers to herself as 'Mama'...that's pretty creepy considering the age difference!

I guess she (Nyla) was not all that in to him (Ray)
cpotato10102 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ray may have had the hots for Nyla, even so much as to take up fishing, so he could off his wife.

But it seems that Nyla found another way to get closer to the money, and she did not have to put up with Ray to do so.

Plus it was probably cheaper than a divorce for Gladys.

Most of the episode is Robert Horton and Anne Francis. I think it was only because this was a half-hour TV show that you did not see, um, more of them.

Still, a fun ride, and a good twist. I really did not see it coming.

I only wish they had not talked so much at the end. It was a little anti-climatic.

"How do you know I'm not sick of being an old woman's husband?"
classicsoncall2 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Alfred Hitchcock throws a knock on TV Westerns in his opening monologue. Robert Horton was in the middle of his run as a star on 'Wagon Train' when he filmed this program, so maybe there was a subtle swipe at his show there. Yet Horton must have been a Hitchcock favorite because this was his seventh appearance in the series.

You know, if Ray Marchand (Horton) was a little more perceptive, he might have avoided his own unhappy ending here, because enough clues were directed his way. Nyla Foster (Anne Francis) didn't appear to be all that enamored of Ray when he first showed interest, and when he actually put a move on her during a walk to the beach, she shoved off in a boat to avoid his advances. But then she lured him in like a good fisherman (fisherwoman?) with those thoughts of making it big on her own with a little help from Ray.

I'm pretty sure Ray's wife Gladys (Vivienne Segal) was in tune to her husband's scheming, and she nailed the story's twist ending for me when she said to him "Where are you planning to try first?" What poor Ray never considered was how Nyla might have also planned on a fast track to inheriting a pile of money that didn't include him. Through it all, Nyla's Dad (John Holland) kept a low profile, figuring Ray would have fallen victim to the trio's conspiracy, hook, line and sinker.

Another sugar momma!
glitterrose20 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Like I was saying in a recent review, I'm not sure if this was done on purpose or if it was an accident for Robert Horton to play characters that had sugar mommas or not. Either way, it still leads up to a delightful episode. And this episode has one of my top favorite scenes from AHP. More on that later.

Our episode focuses mainly on three people. But I will mention a fourth character since he's important to the plot. Ray is married to Gladys. She's older than Ray. It's not a marriage based on love. It's purely based on money. Gladys has it and Ray wants it. Our other two characters are Nyla, who's playing the bait and her father, Mr. Foster.

Ray's getting into another one of his moods and he's attracted to Nyla. You can't say Gladys is in the dark about the basis of her marriage. She knows what Ray's there for. And obviously it's not the first time Ray has acted out. The favorite scene I was mentioning has Gladys threatening to cut Ray's allowance off. Again, there's no telling how many times in their marriage Ray's being punished like a child because his wife has the ability to not give him his allowance if he's acting up.

Anyway, Ray decides he's tired of being married to an old woman and decides the best route to take would be if Gladys is dead. Then he could be with Nyla. Nyla plays the bait very well. She pretends to be interested in Ray. Looking at the episode as a whole, I don't think Nyla cared for Ray at all. It's just part of the plan.

Gladys is into taking a boat out and fishing. That's two things Ray has been open about disliking. But hey, maybe it's time to show an interest in this if it can help get rid of Gladys? Ray decides the best route to take would be knocking Gladys into the water and her drowning since she can't swim.

But things blow up for Ray in an epic way. You don't see how it all plays out in screen but the ending has somebody coming back in the boat rental. Viewer watching for the first time will no doubt think Ray's coming back since this was his grand plan. But nope, GLADYS is the one coming back. Turns out she had a plan of her own. Ray's the one going into the water and Gladys has a perfect reason for not rescuing him. Everybody knows she can't swim.

Our ending focuses on our happy trio of characters left over. Turns out Gladys and Mr. Foster have the hots for each other. And what about Nyla? Nyla's not at all upset or concerned about Ray. She just wants to borrow Gladys' car!

This is a very enjoyable episode I'd highly recommend. Robert Horton plays his gigolo characters perfectly.

ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY!
tcchelsey23 February 2023
You darn well know Hitch had a sense of humor. Here's a prime example.

This is a fun story, and perhaps ahead of its time, as "mature" lady of means Vivienne Segal has landed herself a very young husband, well played by Robert Horton. Problem is --- pretty young thing Anne Francis (scantily dressed) OMG.

The three actors work quite well together and its an interesting cat and mouse story. Of course the looming question: How do you get rid of the old lady? Wait and see. Also listen to the moody music, which sets the right tone in spots. Many of the best Hitchcock episodes owed their success to background music.

Segal is best known for her appearances on this show who, at the time, was married to a CBS network executive. She was originally a Broadway actress and singer, making her film debut in the 1930s.

For car buffs, you have to love that classic 1959 Lincoln convertible. A beautiful machine and worth a lot of money today, if you can get your hands on one!

Recommended for Hitch buffs, which we all are. SEASON 5 remastered Universal dvd box set.

Everybody knows that I can't swim
sol-kay31 May 2013
***SPOILERS*** It's when handsome Ray Marchand, Robert Horton, laid his eyes on the pretty and cute as a pair of pink lased panties Nyla Foster, Anne Francis, it was love or better lust at first sight. The only problem that Ray had in all this was that he's already unhappily married to this battle ax of a wife of his Gladys, Vivienne Segal, who's not going to let her boy toy, who's almost 30 years younger then her, go so easily. And if he does leave her he'll end up without as much as a red cent of the millions that she has.

Wanting to dump his wife and at the same time get into Nyla's hot pants Ray soon finds out from Nyla that his wife Gladys is both very into fishing but at the same time can't swim. This gives Ray a brilliant idea in getting into fishing, which he hates, himself in order to set Gladys up for an accident he's planning for her on the high seas or lake by taking her out for a quite day of fishing.

***SPOILERS*** When the big day comes Ray getting a basket full of beer and sandwiches from Nyla, who's in with his plan to deep six his old lady, and off the two go out in the middle of the lake on Gladys motor boat. What happens next was something that Ray never planned for. Doing his best to off his wife he was soon to realize that Gladys in her not being able to swim was far worse for him then for her. And another thing that Ray never planned on was that there was something else in the basket that Nyla gave him besides sandwiches and beer bottles.

He Done Her Wrong
Hitchcoc3 May 2023
Robert Horton who played mostly in westerns is the slimy gold digging guy who is married to a rich woman. He admits to the sweet young thing that he married her for her money. Even though young Nyla gives him little reason to pursue her, he goes after her with a passion. What he needs, though, is for his wife to die and him to take on the fortune. Then he can have blondie and the money or just the money. So we have the old American Tragedy plot where the unwanted is going to be pushed out of a boat and left to drown. But Horton proves to be a fish out of water (I couldn't help myself, sorry), and that's what proves his undoing.

One of the weaker ones, IMO.
kwally-1396210 January 2023
An average episode with miscast actors playing characters who are very hard to like. Putting thirtysomething Anne Francis in a ponytail and jeans rolled up at the cuff doesn't make her look any more like a college student than Robert Horton's constant gum chewing motions and Potsie sweaters make him look younger than the actress playing his wife. Ms. Francis' line delivery and low-pitched voice doesn't come across as youthful, and some of the dialogue between her and Robert Horton was frankly laughable in both its schmaltz and its failed attempts to make both characters sound like kids. The plot has been done again and again, including the twist-you'll se this one coming from a mile away. Not one of my favorites.
