Sister Isabel, a Catholic, has some disparaging remarks about Londonderry, Ulster, and the Orangemen, all connected with the Protestants of northern Ireland. At the time the story is set, all of Ireland was still part of the United Kingdom, and the partition of Ireland (and the creation of an independent Catholic Republic of Ireland) was still some 40 years into the future.
