The Mirror, The Soup and the Custody
claudio_carvalho27 August 2014
There will be a hearing with the local Judge Halpern to decide who will have the provisional custody of Caleb. Lucas Buck uses his evil powers to be Caleb's tutor. He presses Dan Truelane to betray his colleague and friend Dr. Matt Crower and uses Selena Coombs to denigrate Gail Emory. Meanwhile Caleb befriends Loris Holt, who owns a boarding house and seems to know the occultism. Lucas tries also to use his influence to convince Judge Halpern that he shall be the responsible for the custody of Caleb. Who will be chosen one by the judge?

"Eye of the Beholder" is a sinister episode of "American Gothic". Lucas Buck frightens with his evil powers against Dr. Matt Crower, Dan Truelane and Judge Halpern to have the custody of Caleb. This time, the good defeats the evil, but for how long? My vote is eight.

Who will get custody of Caleb?

Warning: Spoilers
As Caleb's custody hearing approaches Sheriff Lucas Buck is determined that he will be the one to look after the boy… even if Caleb wants to be looked after by Dr. Matt Crower. Buck is determined to discredit the doctor and shortly afterwards an operation goes wrong; Buck suggests that either Matt or his anaesthetist, Dan Truelane, had failed to read the notes… both are convinced that they checked the man's notes but now there is a reference to a pre-existing condition. Buck approaches Dan asking him to help him at Caleb's hearing… soon the pressure mounts; first Dan and his wife are in a car crash then Buck gives them a mirror as a gift; it has a strange effect on Dan's wife. Meanwhile Caleb follows Merlyn to a boarding house where he meets landlady Loris Holt who invites him to make soup with her. Finally it is time for the hearing and it is up to Judge Halpern to decide who will look after Caleb… will it be Lucas Buck, Dr Crower, his cousin Gail Emory or somebody else?

This was another delightfully creepy episode that shows that Sheriff Buck isn't just a manipulative character; he is positively malevolent and has the power to make things happen… and for those who cross him bad things will surely happen. Gary Cole does a fine job as Sheriff Buck; making the viewer believe that he is a bad character but also to make us believe that his character believes that what he is doing is right for Trinity. Lucas Black continues to impress as young Caleb Temple and Tina Lifford is a welcome addition to the cast as Loris Holt. Overall I'd say this was another fine episode; the series is really getting into its stride.
