BETTY, THE TEMP STEP MOM?
tcchelsey18 March 2024
Mann Rubin wrote this episode, who penned the classic soaper THE BEST OF EVERYTHING, starring Joan Crawford (which I just reviewed!). Mann wrote many episodes for MANNIX, and may have been thinking about his secretary, Peggy, who was caught up with the same type of friends.

Betty has lunch with an acquaintance --he disappears and she is left with his young son?

The scenario, though, is a plus, considering past episodes where Betty had lunch with friends who were killed.

That said... her old boy friend is in danger, involved in a heist with some devious characters, and Barnaby enters the picture. I agree with the last reviewer, considering all the fatalities, Betty should have NO friends left. Same sitaution for Peggy season after season, although she had a real son. Betty plays a step mom of sorts, which is a new angle. And you know, Betty would have made a super mom.

Good cast of veterans with popular Roger Perry, playing Don. Perry seemed to turn up everywhere on tv, and slightly resembled Alan Young (MR. ED).

He did both drama and comedy, known for LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE. Not to miss Charles Cyphers, who also appeared many times on the series, who after this episode guest starred multiple times on THE BETTY WHITE SHOW as Hugo.

A story with a different slant, but the usual bad company. I give in 9 Stars for Lee Meriwether, a wonderful actress. SEASON 6 EPISODE 14 remastered color.

If you are a friend of Betty, wow are bad things gonna happen!!

While I enjoy "Barnaby Jones", I must admit that occasionally the writing was very lazy. I say this because some plot lines really were overused to the point of being silly....such as on "Mannix" when he gets knocked out for the 475th time! Well, in this case, the overused plot involves being a friend of Betty's. In episode after episode after episode, acquaintances of Betty are killed, commit murders, are kidnapped and more. It's to the point where you'd THINK Betty would have no friends left...because they either were all killed or in prison...or they simply ran away and refused to have anything to do with her!!

In this case, Betty's victim is an old friend from college. She hasn't seen him in years and suddenly he appears in her life...and introduces her to his son. Now when this happens, you KNOW something will happen to the father and Betty will become a surrogate mommy...which is EXACTLY what happens. See the show and see how all this unfolds.

Because this is yet another trip to Bettyland, I cannot rate this episode very high. In addition, the cute little boy isn't very cute or endearing and the plot is decent but nothing more. I really WISH they'd stop making these Betty's friends in peril episodes...and hopefully there won't be so many in the rest of the episodes.
