RIGHT OFF THE CLIFF AND INTO OBLIVION!

Calvin Clements, Jr wrote this neat adventure, and he knew his stuff. Clements wrote some of the best episodes of BARNABY JONES and was associated with GUNSMOKE, among many other hit shows.

There is no question that the top tv cop show writers had a background in westerns; they knew how to stage a fight and come up with some memorable villains.

Here, Barnaby has the puzzling case as to how and why a businessman, who designs and rides motorcycles, just sailed his bike off a cliff. There are some intriguing characters, good and bad, shuffled in the deck. Claudette Nevins, who frequently appeared on the show, plays Francis. Nevins was superb at playing mystery ladies for years. Later in her career she was a regular on MELROSE PLACE. Mariette Hartley, who at the time was doing the famous and funny camera commercials with James Garner, plays Carolyn. She is very good in this role.

There is an excellent stalking scene in this one with victim Claudette Nivens. It is real, real creepy and well directed by William Wiard, who was long associated with CANNON. He later handled the ROCKFORD FILES.

We also get an early glimpse of popular actor Larry Minnetti, pre MAGNUM PI, and more recently playing Nick "The Kid" on the new HAWAII FIVE O.

In the goof department, and I thought this only happened on MANNIX --- watch carefully at the start as you can see the shadows of the crew cameramen as bikers are testing motorcycles. Generally, producer Quinn Martin used the rugged landscape in the high desert of California, such as Lancaster, which has miles of dirt roads. Also, if you head up to Victorville and Barstow (on the way to Las Vegas) there are some outstanding filming locations

Once again the majestic Gulls Estate at Malibu serves as the family mansion here. Recommended for all of us arm chair thrill seekers. SEASON 3 EPISODE 8 remastered CBS dvd box set.
