Sandcrab Review Extremely Negative
mark57605 September 2019
If this is the best you have to say about an episode, don't even write a review. I found the acting by Buddy Ebsen, Lee Merriweather, and Gary Lockwood to be excellent. The episode was also very tension filled for a single hour episode and peril as to how the episode would be resolved. I highly recommend it. Beware if you are a pet lover though.

I Don't Understand the Negative Reviews
rlnkkeesee14 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have only recently become aware of this old gem of a detective show via MeTV. I've started streaming episodes, beginning with season 1, and I really, really liked this episode.

I thought Gary Lockwood was perfect in his role as the twitchy bad guy. He created some terrific mannerisms for his character that seemed so realistic. I don't know much about this actor, but he's very talented as far as I'm concerned. His quirky portrayal of this character was a lot of what kept me interested in this episode.

Lee Meriwether also shone in this one. It was perfectly believable when she offered the bad guy a ride out of the kindness of her heart, this seemed in keeping with her character's kind disposition, and he was very convincing in his pretense of being an old college buddy of her late husband.

Good story, cool ending. I think this episode is well worth a look.

Excellently done early episode

The cinematography is brilliant. The later years of the show it often seemed less clear (at least the copies I saw and played in reruns a lot).

The cast is excellent. Lockwood belonged in big screen film way more than he got to be. He is top notch as the deranged father/ex-con/ex-husband who is hunting Barnaby and Betty.

Also, very good is highly beautiful Corrine Comacho as his ex-wife. I wish indeed her part had been bigger. She would have done very well. Thus, the 9 rather than 10 star rating.

Many elements are so well done in this ep you just wish there was more of them. A true gem early in the series run!

SUNDAY IS A ROTTEN DAY TO DIE... BEWARE!
tcchelsey25 May 2022
I remember when this episode came out, and I thought it was sobering. This may be the best episode of the entire series as everything clicks.

It's a bit scary too, considering armed stalkers to this very day.

The team of Martin Fine and David Friedkin, who wrote THE PAWNBROKER starring Rod Steiger, put this one together and deserve a lot of credit, especially for the deep psychological slant.

Gary Lockwood, who came from the Anthony Zerbe school of villains, plays Howard Lee, a smirking, creepy guy who wants to settle an old score with Barnaby who sent him to prison years ago. Strictly a cat and mouse game that reminded me of a HAWAII FIVE O episode, the perfect scenario for a much younger Steve McGarrett.

We also get a glimpse of Barnaby Jones sprawling ranch, probably out in the San Fernando Valley (Chatsworth is a good guess), special thanks to producer Quinn Martin who enjoyed his scenery, which was a staple on CANNON. This was also filmed around Century City (where Barnaby is photographed by Howard leaving a building), perhaps for old movie buffs, once the site for the 20th Century Fox studios.

Barnaby's faithful dog, Shane, is killed and that's crossing the line, at least to all of us kids back in the day . Period. Barnaby also has a very talented horse, called Tamar. Watch him in action. Lee Meriwether is exceptional here, especially in final scene.

This is a grim episode, and It will also stick with you for awhile. A dynamic supporting cast, lead by Corinne Comacho as Howard's wife, Vince Howard as Lt. Taylor and look for popular veteran actress Jeff Donnell, as the mother of a suspect. Jeff was in so many great movies, and popular on tv.

A writers "message" here. This episode aired on a Sunday night and Barnaby was to be killed on a Sunday. OMG. SEASON 1 EPISODE 3 remastered CBS dvd box set.

Barnaby battles a loon.
planktonrules3 July 2021
Howard Lee (Gary Lockwood) is not the healthiest of guys...at least when it comes to his mental health. It seems that long ago, when Barnaby Jones was a cop, he caught Lee and Lee went to prison....and he blames Jones for his messed up life. But Lee clearly is imbalanced. And so, his plan, is to let Barnaby know SOMEONE is going to kill him and on Sunday the 4th.

This is a fair episode of the series. Buddy Ebsen's character is good. Lee Meriwether, however, seems a bit dim (uncharacteristically so) and Lockwood is almost cartoonish in his lunacy. A fair to good episode...entertaining but with some problems when it came to characters....especially when Meriwether's character offers the guy a lift!

never cared for this show

I'm sure tons of people liked the folksy appeal of buddy ebson but it always reminded me of the beverly hillbillies so i rarely if ever watch it yet today i discovered that the ever worthless gary lockwood not only played the psycho killer in this episode but 5 others ... it goes to show you how hard up they were for decent guest roles
