Water Water Everywhere

I'm a sucker for episodes of TV detective shows that take place around the water. There is so much you can do with water. Drink it. Bathe in it. Swim in it. Look for sunken treasure, etc etc. And you always know that at some point somebody is going to try to kill somebody with a speargun. And that's always fun.

"Something is happening here and you don't know what it is, do you Mr. Jones." -Bob Dylan sang back in the Sixties.

It's Barnaby Jones job to find out what's happening. And he's very good at it. This episode is quite complicated and it's fun to follow along with all the twists and turns.

A TREASURE WORTH DYING FOR?
tcchelsey30 January 2024
True, it's always fun when there are stories about sunken treasure, and this is a prime example for a change of pace. 10 Stars.

A fortune in jade art is buried on the ocean floor, treasure hunters are trying to snatch it up and are getting killed one at a time. Beware! This story may have been partly lifted from HAWAII FIVE O, particularly the way the killer surprises his victims.

JR also lends a helping hand by doing some diving himself, another reason why his character was an important addition to the series. Janice Lynde co-stars as Alice, who at the time was appearing on the YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, and would remain with the show until 2021. Big guy Don Gordon appears as Carl and Robert Ito has a good part as Nin Tsu.

I agree with the notes; Barnaby's white jacket does cause some reflection problems. Colors are a big headache for photographers, and they probably just let the scene go without re-filming, either time or budget issues. Well written by Paul Richard Coyle, later series writer for CRAZY LIKE A FOX and JAKE AND THE FATMAN.

SEASON 5 EPISODE 4 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set.

Whoever wrote this knew about scuba...but not about CPR!

Warning: Spoilers
"The Fatal Dive" is a nice change of pace, though the script has some serious logical problems....one of which makes pretty much everything in the show irrelvant!

Some divers stumble upon something odd....a downed private plane...and a recent one. Soon a representative of the South Vietnamese government arrives (Robert Ito) to inform them there's a treasure on the plane...but soon folks diving to retrieve it start dying! Fortunately for Barnaby, Jedidah (who is actually useful for the first time in the series) knows how to dive and he gives Barnaby valuable help. But then, there's a BIG twist.

I'll cut to the chase...and it's a MAJOR spoiler...which is why I made sure to point this out. After all the murders, you learn that the treasure never was in the plane. This is a HUGE problem because it means that there was absolutely no reason for the murders...none. How the writers never thought of this, I have no idea.

Additionally, there are a few other writing issues. First, a shot from a .38 revolver (or any revolver) would NOT knock you into a pool. Physics just don't work that way. Second, the writer really should have learned about CPR, as Jedidiah's actions when he finds a dying diver is nuts. He brings him back to the ship ASAP and then slugs him in the chest!! He never gives him artificial respiration and gives up on trying to revive him VERY quickly! This is a shame, as the folks who wrote and made the episode DID know about scuba and this aspect of the show was well done.

Overall, while Jedidiah was NOT annoying and useless like he was in the prior season five episodes, the logical problems with the show really make it tough to love.
