Barnaby loses his first case? Well, sorta.

When the story begins, the actress Shirley Evans (Anne Francis) reports that some unseen person has been terrorizing and threatening her...and the woman seems VERY unhinged. This is more of a problem because she's a recovering alcoholic...and being terrorized might push her back to the bottle. Barnaby Jones is hired to investigate this, and a murder of someone connected to the case.

This is a very unusual episode when it comes to the solution of the crimes. It's very weird and NOT typical...and is good for a change of pace even if it does seem a bit farfetched. Worth seeing...and a bit shrill at times...almost comically so.

entertaining but overwrought

Warning: Spoilers
Anne Francis was an interesting actress. She was at her best when she was subtle but here she's often required of overact. I think to a point it does work she is good at playing someone who acts as if she feels absolute terror but the real terror isn't some unknown stalker but her own fear of performing and the people watching her. He character (Shirley Evans) is also an alcholic .She has a daughter who would rather just have her as a mother. She has more than she can handle and the while I could see the resolution coming a mile away I still think it's an intersting episode as it raises the seldom explored of the person who doesn't want to be a star. The one who has be required to since childhood. We are so star obsessed in our society we can forget it's not what everyone wants.

THE ACTRESS WITH MULTIPLE PROBLEMS....

This is a familiar story... and then again, perhaps not. Of course, with Anne Francis in the lead, it's worth a look. Francis plays Shirley Evans, an actress who claims someone is trying to kill her career, if not kill her. Francis is very good in a similar type of role that Anne Baxter would usually play, though in this case she's a former alcoholic, further complicating matters. The question lingers, is it booze or something else?

There's some interesting suspects here and a very good cast to back it all up. Donald J. Travanti plays Lloyd, likewise battling the bottle --or is he? William Smithers, another of tv's finest villains, plays Burt. Look for young Dawn Lynn (MY THREE SONS) as Kathy. Dawn is the sister of singer Leif Garrett.

Robert W. Lenski wrote an excellent script, and with a deeper than usual role for Francis. She's the star attraction here. Lenski wrote a total of 16 episodes for the series, eight for MANNIX and six for CANNON.

Watch how this one unfolds. Not quite the case Barnaby is accustomed to solving, either. One for the books.

From SEASON 4 EPISODE 2 remastered dvd box set.
