FInally....an episode about a take-charge woman!
planktonrules8 July 2021
Larry is an author who hasn't brought out anything new in years. In the interim, he's been able to live quite well, as his wife is rich. In addition to his job as a writer, Larry often has been in televised debates with a feminist, Brooke (Jessica Walter) and they seem to hate each other. But what no one knows apart from the two is that they are having an affair...and Brooke is sick of Larry's promises to leave his wife. Sick of waiting, Brooke takes it upon herself to kill the wife. When Larry finds out what she's done, he's horrified...but quickly gets with the program. In fact, when her doctor friend knows too much, Larry takes care of him by tossing him off a balcony! Obviously, both of these folks are real scumbags.

This is a decent episode of "Barnaby Jones" with which I have only one quibble...the way the wife was murdered. It seemed so poorly planned with a HIGH possibility she'd survive! But despite this, Walter's cold performance was perfect and the script quite entertaining.

Why?

Warning: Spoilers
A previous commenter posted that it was highly likely that the wheelchair-bound wife would survive. What?! She was pushed into the pool and could not swim due to being paralyzed. It is more than likely that the wife would *not* survive, that she would drown in the pool! Jessica Walter did a great job, especially in the scene where she dumped the wife into the pool. She was very cold-blooded. Ed Nelson did his usual great job in playing the scuzzy husband who was having an affair on his wife. Also, it was very clever what Barnaby did to catch the killers by making them think the dog who had bitten Jessica (the dog was very devoted to the murdered wife and had bitten Jessica when he got out of his cage) had rabies.

HOW COULD SHE HAVE DONE THAT?

First episode of 1974, and it's a winner. And I agree with the last reviewer, it's sobering to see a woman in the typical bad guy role and what she does! It's horrific.

Robert Herverly wrote this adventure, long associated with the F. B. I. TV show. He actually may have been inspired by a real case similar to this one.

Jessica Walters is at her prime, playing Brooke, a well known tv personality who is having an affair with Larry (played by Ed Nelson), one of the gentlemen she regularly bashes on tv.

It's all a game, but it goes haywire when Brooke decides to simply kill his wife (he's apparently dragging his feet!) so they can finally get married. The murder scene is not for the faint of heart; Brooke actually rolls his wheelchair-bound wife into a pool! It's a sobering scene.

The pool drowning theme was quite popular with tv detectives, used effectively on a classic episode of COLUMBO which involved his boss.

The payback here is the clever way Barnaby gets to both of them, a rabid dog playing into the case. Very interesting stuff, again thanks to Robert Heverly.

Look for young Bonnie Ebsen (Buddy's daughter), playing Brooke's secretary. Bonnie would turn up in other roles on the series, and she was very talented. All purpose character actor Joseph Mell plays the vet, who always reminded me of one of the Three Stooges.

Another gem. SEASON 2 EPISODE 14 remastered dvd box set.

Another Implausible Plot Driven by Divine Inspiration!
WYAdams28 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Barnaby has absolutely no reason to suspect Brooke (Jeesica Walter) and yet by divine inspiration she is the first person he suspects and somehow, he knows she has an intimate relationship with Larry. Of course, once he visits her, he notices the photograph Larry posed for, intimating she knows him well enough for him to pose for it. Then he is suspicious of her cast and broken fingernail.

This is the kind of sloppy, lazy writing that permeates this entire series. Barnaby almost always knows who the culprit is even when there are no connections between the suspect and the crime. Better writers would have him find the suspect by developing leads from real clues rather than have him magically divine a suspect then find the clues convict the person.

Don't waste your time watching this tripe, I'm sorry I did!

Who Wrote This? A Twelve Year Old?
amylovestv16 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I had high hopes for this episode going into it with a cast like Ed Nelson and Jessica Walter, but my hopes were quickly dashed as the plot progressed. The acting was not the problem; it was the horrible script and poorly-written characters. Barnaby barely had to do any work to figure out the crime because the gooney couple right out of a screwball comedy had no careful planning whatsoever. They were practically begging to be caught! It's like, what did they think would happen? Especially in the second death. And why did Barnaby spend all that time whipping the fire in the barn with his suitcoat (which was clearly doing nothing) instead of shooting the chain off the door like he finally thinks to do later? As someone else mentioned, it just seemed like extremely lazy writing. Though I love Ed Nelson and Jessica Walter, don't waste your time on this episode. It's not only silly but quite cliche.
