    [Earlier in the story, Bat had agreed to trade his gold-headed cane for the Indian chief's walking stick in payment for one horse. Bat and the chief have returned to the scene of the exchange. Bat tells the chief that his cane wasn't sufficient payment and offers the chief two horses in payment for the return of his cane. The chief agrees, and they make the exchange] 

    Indian Chief : You are true friend. My medicine man speak with crooked tongue. He say White man shrewd trader. Now I know better.
