- Oliver Jenkins: I wonder if you realize that in England, there's virtually no crime at all. We've reached a point of civilization where even the bobbies, policemen you call them, don't carry guns. They need nothing more than their sticks - and that's the result of respect for the law.
- Bat Masterson: I don't think we're quite that civilized here, Mr. Jenkins.
- [Bat holds up his cane]
- Bat Masterson: To use the stick to enforce the law like this, you may be needing two...
- [picks up a yardstick and makes a cross]
- Bat Masterson: ...like this!
- [Bat believes that Hobart and his henchmen have kidnapped Oliver Jenkins]
- [toasting]
- Bat Masterson: Health!
- Jess Hobart: Yours or mine?
- Bat Masterson: Oliver Jenkins'.
- Deborah Jenkins: If you try to bring father back, they'll kill you both!
- Bat Masterson: I know. I've already been extended the invitation.
- Bat Masterson: You know, the only reason I had him unkidnapped was to have my clothes cut.
- Deborah Jenkins: That wasn't the only reason.
- Bat Masterson: Well you, uh, you did threaten me with a gun.
- Deborah Jenkins: Isn't there... any other reason?
- Bat Masterson: No, uh, I like my girls, uh, older and less attractive.
- [first lines]
- Narrator: The town of Junction, New Mexico Territory - spring 1881. The Territory was young, and federal law had not yet penetrated the undeveloped areas. The making and enforcing of the law was always a part of the colorful history of Bat Masterson, the man who became a legend in his own time.
- [last lines]
- [Bat meets Deborah Jenkins in front of her father's tailor shop, and she tells him that her father has closed the business. After their conversation, Bat goes inside]
- Bat Masterson: I was told you went out of business.
- Oliver Jenkins: As a token of gratitude to you, the committee gave me permission to cut one last suit.
- Bat Masterson: I appreciate that. Since you're doing it, don't forget the little inside pocket.
- Oliver Jenkins: What for?
- Bat Masterson: I keep my bullets there. You see, we're not civilized here.
- Oliver Jenkins: It's coming.
- [He irons a bolt of fabric]
- Oliver Jenkins: This is going to take me some time. What are you going to do in the meanwhile?
- Bat Masterson: [looks toward the door and smiles] I'll find something.
- [Bat exits the shop; walks briskly toward Deborah, who is walking down a sidewalk; and catches up with her]
