According to the audio commentary, this is considered one of the most fan reviled episodes of the series.
There's a scene where Batman is being chased by a mutant "chicken" into a food factory where it crashes into a large tank of barbecue sauce. Originally, the script called for the chicken to crash into a tank of frying oil and it would be "fried". Somebody on the team didn't like this idea (thinking it was too violent) and changed it to barbecue sauce. Ironically, the sauce turned out to be a worse choice because it was a dark red and made the chicken appear to be covered in blood.
When Robin sees one of the giant bulls, he shouts "Holy Cow!" and Batgirl says "You had to say it." This hearkens back to Batman (1966), where Robin prefaced his exclamations with "Holy".
When describing how he landed the job to write this script, Joe R. Lansdale explained "The gut that invented Howard the Duck came up with the idea, and i guess he sketched it out, and for whatever reason, he didn't write the script. I don't know why. But they though 'who else is as crazy as this guy?' and so they got me".
Joe R. Lansdale has stated multiple inspirations for this episode, including: H.G. Wells' "The Food of the Gods and How it Came to Earth", The Deadly Mantis (1957), and Reptilicus (1961). hi own personal experience as a farmer helped shape the script as well.
