Funny Ol' Business - Cops & Robbers

After the one off pilot, The Bill was greenlit to a series.

The focus has broadened from woodentop PC Carver and towards Detective Inspector Galloway and Sergeant Bob Cryer.

The similarities with Hill Street Blues are evident as Sergeant Cryer gives a morning briefing and is the anchor for all the uniformed officers. Someone they can all rely on.

DI Galloway is there at the briefing asking the cops to be on a lookout for a particular kind of burglary featuring double glazed doors.

You get a wider team here from WPCs Ackland and Martella to the brash PC Litten.

Carver gets his first arrest only for the criminal to be released as he is a snout. Carver also gets his uniformed messed up.

Although there is a talk of a National Front march, it is not featured in this episode. A lot of the stories are neatly wrapped up here. Galloway identifies the double glazing firm whose fitters were copying keys to gain entry. A pickpocket finds that one man who had lived in Hong Kong knew how to use fishhooks to deter pilfering hands.

I did not realised that Burnside appeared in the first episode. Then only a Detective Sergeant, he needs a favour from Galloway as it is his snout that Carver arrested. Burnside would return several years later as Galloway's replacement.

Brilliant acting. Great stunts and a catchy soundtrack.
