BLACK SADDLE – "Client Meade" – 1959

This is episode two of the 44 episode run of the 1959-60 western series, BLACK SADDLE. Peter Breck stars as a former gunfighter turned lawyer. Of course his past gets him in all sorts of trouble.

In this episode, a young man, Clu Gulager, rides into town to see a friend of his, Ned Glass. Three brothers, Hamp Fancher, Joe Perry and Avrid Nelson with a previous beef with Gulager, are also in town. Nelson draws on Gulager but gets the short end of the debate. The remaining two brothers swear out a charge of murder against Gulager.

Breck steps up to defend him. He finds a witness, George Mitchell, to the killing. Mitchell backs Gulager's version of self defense. A hearing is called but the witness changes his story. He now says that Gulager murdered Nelson. Marshall Russell Johnson tosses Gulager in Jail to wait for the circuit judge.

Breck and Johnson quiz the witness again and discover that Fancher and Perry had threatened to kill Mitchell's wife and child. Complicating matters is Gulager's friend, Glass. Glass has busted Gulager out of jail. This brings more gun-play as the two remaining brothers, Fancher and Perry come a gunning. Breck and Johnson arrive just in time to join the gunfight. Gulager is killed while Fancher and Perry are dispatched by Breck.

A quick half hour duster with plenty of violence.

It was a blood bath

Warning: Spoilers
A young man rides into town, and immediately there's a killing. Being a lawyer, Clay assures the man he has nothing to worry about if he is innocent, but due to the brothers throwing their weight around, it soon becomes evident that a simple eye-witness isn't going to be enough to get this man off.

There is a moral lesson at the end of this episode that's good for us, even today. We like to lay the blame on others when things go wrong, but sometimes we are as much to blame ourselves! The woman, Helen Bryson, in this episode knows how to put her husband in his spot. She's not afraid to speak her mind.

This is a pretty violent episode. In the end, there are four dead.

Client: Meade

Andy Meade (Clu Gulager) is a young man who has rode into town. He has had previous beef with the Tibbett brothers and immediately gets involved in a gunfight with Ed Tibbett.

Meade guns down Tibbett and Clay Culhane rushes to stand side by side with Meade when the other two Tibbett brothers descend.

Annoyed with Culhane getting in the way. They go to Marshall Scott and complain that Meade killed their brother in cold blood.

Meanwhile Clay Culhane tries to get Meade to puts his faith in the law and that he would defend Meade.

There was an eyewitness to the gunfight and the Tibbett brothers place pressure on him. The witness tells the Marshall that Meade shot Ed rather than draw in self defence.

It is a simple story of Culhane getting the eyewitness to do the right thing. He just wants to keep his family safe.

The story is rather downbeat. A subtext that maybe the legal system is more complex and cannot help everyone.
