Noah Beery does an outstanding job of playing a mentally challenged man, Johnny Mule, that has been accused of murder. In fact when the episode begins his trial for killing ranch owner Louden and it looks like Johnny cannot survive the strong evidence against him. But it just so happens that Hoss is on the jury and is the only hold-out on the conviction. Johnny will get a new trail which is much to the displeasure of Louden's sons, Virgil and Cleve.
The two Louden brothers have a history with a young female named, Marcy. It seemed Marcy was going to marry Virgil until Virgil ran out on her so she set her eyes on the younger brother, Cleve. But now Virgil and Cleve have made-up and their desire is to kill Johnny Mule for the murder of their father.
Hoss, the always protector of the innocent person, starts to retrace all the evidence. He believes that there is more to this story than meets the eye. But Hoss will have a hard time when Johnny breaks out of jail and suddenly Virgil is shot. All the signs point to Johnny.
This was a very entertaining and nicely acted show. Mr. Beery shows off his acting abilities as he portrays the often misunderstood simpleton, Johnny Mule. With a interesting plot and some great actors this episode is very memorable. As most of the shows in this ninth season are a bit stale, this episode was a breath of fresh air.
