Ben Cartwright's paternal instincts
bkoganbing12 October 2016
This episode of Bonanza shows the reason that Ben Cartwright was considered by many to be best TV Dad. With the addition of Mitch Vogel to bring in younger viewers there were opportunities like this story to demonstrate Ben Cartwright's paternal instincts.

Jamie Hunter Cartwright does a reckless and gets a supply wagon wrecked and a horse killed. He's too big to spank so Lorne Greene tries a different approach. Greene has a planned swing around the outer reaches of the Ponderosa and he takes Vogel along with him. They have a pack horse with them indicating this is going to be one long road trip.

Running a big place like the Ponderosa is a lot of responsibility and during the course of this road trip Vogel gets to see just how much responsibility is involved. In the various situations and people they run into he gets to see why Ben Cartwright deals as he does, differently depending on the people.

Best scenes are with involving Lorne Greene and Ralph Moody playing an old Indian who Ben pays to kill wolves. Moody is getting on in years. His scenes are incredibly poignant.

One of the best later Bonanza episodes.
