Warning: Spoilers
Tom Jeffords convinces Cochise that Apaches would be best in tracking down Geronimo, and that was the start of the Apache scouts. But a young Apache, Hermano, has a brother, Sanchi, who rides with Gerinimo and thus is torn between loyalties. And then there are the white men like McKeever who hate all Apaches, even those who scout for the Army.

Jeffords takes Hermano with him to train as a scout even though Cochise is against it. Cochise does not believe Hermano is ready. And one poor choice could destroy the program. Even the other scouts are opposed to the choice.

Then the call comes for Chee to lead his brother Apache scouts into action. Col McBride is dubious about the scouts. The scouts find a renegade band with Geronimo and Sanchi. Hermano is told to stay with the horses but he takes off his blue coat and rides into the Indian camp and warns them so they can escape.

Jeffords has put the scout program into jeopardy by making Hermano a scout. Col McBride is angry and refuses to use scouts; but changes his mind and promises at any sign of treachery he will kill all the scouts.

At a burned-out attack site, Jeffords finds Hermano's scout papers. The scouts move forward and are going into a trap. Hermano is given an assignment by Sanchi, kill Jeffords. Killing Jeffords will make him one of Geronimo's band. As Jeffords rides forward he places Hermano's blue coat on his saddle. Hermano makes a choice and fires a warning shot. During the fighting Hermano dies but is buried as an army scout.
