It's been years and an Indian war in which 1,000 white lives were lost and many Apaches died also. Since then Cochise has signed a peace; however, some report seeing Lt. Haskell alive and in town. Impossible because he died in the war he started; started because Lt. George Haskell took five Indians who were under a white flag, and he treacherously hung them. If he is alive he has a new name: George Pilgrim. And he is traveling with a wife. Jeffords goes to talk with Mrs. Pilgrim to see what she knows.
Mrs. Pilgrim met and married her husband in Philadelphia. Even then he seemed lost to her. She was drawn to his loneliness, but it was a mistake/ She says it's like living with a ghost. Jeffords wants to know if she ever heard the name George Haskell. She doesn't, but Jeffords tells her who he believes her husband is.
Pilgrim/Haskell has gone off and Jeffords goes looking for him. If it is Haskell, Jeffords believes he has to find out first. Even Cochise says the hatred for Haskell is so strong that he lives outside of the peace treaty Cochise signed.
It is Haskell. Over the years his conscience has been torturing him. He can't sleep. He can't find any rest. He has returned so that the Apaches will take him and kill him. Jeffords catches up and Pilgrim admits he is Haskell. On the battlefield, he exchanged papers with a corpse and took that man's identity. Jeffords knows the Apaches are watching and he has to get Pilgrim away before another war breaks out. But Jeffords' horse gets spooked, and by the time Jeffords gets back, Pilgrim is gone.
Jeffords goes to get Cochise but his braves want to torture Pilgrim before they kill him. Cochise says no. He tells his braves to look into the eyes of Haskell. The man is dead already. Killing him would be to do him a favor. The best revenge now is to let him live in the torture that haunts him. He has a sickness for which there is no cure.
