As with the last episode of season three, the cliff-hanger at the end of this episode was designed to improve the declining viewing figures. This time, however, the strategy did not work and the series was canceled by the BBC.
As of May 2019, there has been no continuation of the series, however the series was released on DVD a decade earlier. Additionally, the series was never repeated after its first broadcast, on the BBC, and doesn't appear to have gained even a re-run on a minority nostalgia/geek satellite or cable channel in the UK.
As the last 3 episodes of season 4 ended up being shown as an unofficial season 5 trilogy, a year later than intended, due to being held back due to the Omagh bombing, in Northern Ireland, on 15th August 1998, and the previous 7 episodes of series 4 had already previously been losing viewers, its possible that this season finale was deliberately ambigious.
