When Ponch rescues the little girl from the car, his gun is in his holster. When he is lowered to save the mother in the car, his gun is missing from his holster.
In the opening scenes, Jon and Ponch are on a rural freeway while the scenes showing the speeding white car were shot on an urban freeway. The road signs for Washington and then National Boulevards indicate it was filmed on the Santa Monica freeway, while the background for Jon and Ponch resembles the Foothill Freeway.
When the truck loaded with PVC pipe blows past the scales, the logo on the side of the truck reads Sea Lion Pipe Co. After Ponch and Jon take off after him, the side of the truck is now marked ML Trucking. And when they finally pull him over, it's marked Sea Lion Pipe Co. again.
Jon & Ponch were following the car they are chasing but after the boat crashes into the beauty salon they approach the accident from a different direction.
Small boats such as the one shown have a floor and an outer hull. Jumping into the boat may damage the floor, but it would not damage the hull and allow water inside as shown.
The PVC pipes could not have fallen from the truck as shown, since the forward and middle straps were tight when the driver pulled on them. Pulling the rear one loose as he did could not make them fall off the truck.
The front of the boat is lifted via a ramp just prior to it going through the window. It was on a downward trajectory prior to that point and the bottoms of the store windows were a couple of feet off the ground.
Upon giving the Weigh Station assignment, Getraer rebuffs Ponch's comments on having a righteous week and getting a promotion. When Ponch made the comments, he spoke in a quiet voice while still in the hallway, and at the same time Getraer was in his office speaking on the telephone. It would seem unlikely Getraer would have been able to hear Ponch in such conditions.
When the green truck pulls up for inspection, the shadows/reflections of the crew in front of it are visible in the paint.
Neither Jon nor Ponch use the already broken rear window to rescue the car's occupants even though that was a less-hazardous means of accessing the car and did not require adding their weight to the top side of the car.
When teaching Jon and Ponch about the weight limits for axles, Vogt tells them axles other than front axles are limited to 20,000 pounds and front axles are limited to 12,500 pounds unless it is a certain type of truck. When the second stolen trailer comes through, the scale reads a maximum of 13,800 pounds and Vogt says it is a "good 3,000 pounds over." It was only 1,300 pounds over if it was a front axle, however when he calls Ponch he tells him it was the rear axle, so it was not overweight at all. Since it was not overweight, it would not have been flagged for inspection and the subsequent plot events would not have taken place.
Three characters use improper radio designators. CHP radio designators are by the city and then the frequency designator. For example, LA 15 was a frequency assigned to the CHP Central office. Newhall used 78. When the unnamed patrol officer calls in seeing the stolen blue truck, he incorrectly says "Newhall 78 David." When Jon uses the radio after leaving the weigh station, he incorrectly says "Newhall 7 Mary 3". When Vogt uses the radio to call for the rescue unit, he incorrectly says "LA 78 S1". The patrol officer should have said "Newhall 78" and his unit number and alpha designator, such as 7 David. Jon should have said "Newhall 78, 7 Mary 3" while Vogt should have said "Newhall 78, S1".
When assigning Jon and Ponch to the scales, after Jon complains, Getraer says "Yeah, for weeks." Ponch then replies "A week?" Getrear should have said "For a week." since the actual assignment was for a week.
