NICK NOLTE SHINES IN AN EARLY ROLE...
tcchelsey16 April 2022
CANNON was a springboard for many young actors, as was the MOD SQUAD. That was very important in Hollywood. Case in point, Nick Nolte, who plays a young boxer, mixed up with some really bad apples. What happens? He accidentally kills a heckler in a bar. Or did the guy REALLY die?

I took one star off because this storyline is familiar, but it has it's moments, another top 10 episode for CBS. About this time the series was ranking 8, 9 or 10 in the Neilsen ratings, NO cable in those days, so a large part of the country was watching. Producer Quinn Martin came up with the famous "Cannon will be right back" station identification at the midway point, to alert millions of viewers and tv affiliates this would be the longest break. MOD SQUAD did the same, and it became a cult feature. Thank you to METV for running some of those classic breaks, too.

This was the only episode directed by tv pioneer Marc Daniels, who handled a ton of classic sitcoms, best known for I LOVE LUCY. Daniels was also associated with many cop shows and the original STAR TREK series. Future soap opera star Jess Walton has a very good role here. Special guest star is John Marley, who was Oscar nominated for his terrific performance in LOVE STORY, later as the producer who stood up to the GODFATHER --- and got a horse head in his bed. OMG. Marley was actually Jewish, though he played some tough Italians in his day. He worked with Bill Conrad at Warner Brothers/ABC tv; SURFSIDE 6 and HAWAIIN EYE. Many others.

He plays Nolte's manager, who may or may not be on his side? Watch for famous character actress Rita Shaw as "Angel" the manager of an apartment complex, who trades some good lines with Cannon.

You can tell everyone had fun on the set, thanks to Marc Daniels. Catch the running gag where the bad guy keeps stealing candy bars? That had to be for kicks.

Cannon uses another car, not the Lincoln; the goons shoot out his windows, poetic license strikes again coupled with a tight budget. Although I think MANNIX had an even tighter budget at Paramount.

This was filmed in and around North Hollywood, looks like the opening was filmed in Burbank off Olive Avenue. SEASON 3 Dec 1973 remastered color CBS dvd box set. 2012.

A very, very weak episode...
planktonrules13 April 2017
I think my score of 4 might just be a bit generous. But I certainly did not love the show...mostly because practically every cop and detective show (such as "Hawaii Five-O" and "Mannix") had boxing episodes where suddenly the characters love boxing and know everyone in the boxing world...though it never was mentioned before or after! It was overused so much that I dare call it a cliché.

When the show begins, an up and coming prize fighter is in a bar when a crazed, mouthy older man comes up to him and begins bad- mouthing him. No biggie. But then the older guy slugs the young boxer...and, instinctively, the young guy slugs him back...and the older guy seems to be dead!! So, it's up to Cannon (who is completely out of his element here) to come to the rescue and figure out what really is happening here.

This episode has one too many improbable and ridiculous plot twist. It also seemed weird and difficult to understand why Cannon would be involved in all this...as well as how Cannon could beat the crap out of one recently retired boxers! Pretty lame.
