Strange villain..even for Cannon
dpc6921 December 2017
This episode features ingenue Kitty Winn as a pretty young thing out to have him killed for the shooting death of her boyfriend (who was trying to shoot Cannon himself) or so it seems! Intricate plot involving mob connections, undercover operations and unique character study. Cudos to Miss Winn! She plays this wide-eyed without a trace of evil venom, simply matter-of-fact. When she batts her blue eyes you can see her sincerity in wanting the fat man dead. So much so that she will go to any lengths to get it, against her father's wishes. He's got to pay...period! But the best plot twist is yet to come (No spoilers)!

A lot of this one doesn't make sense....just turn off your brain and enjoy.

Warning: Spoilers
There are quite a few things about "Daddy's Little Girl" that just don't make sense. My advice is just turn off your brain and enjoy...and try not to think too much as your mind starts complaining about the writing!

When the show begins, Cannon is in a restaurant. A mob assassin, Gianni, appears about ready to make a hit and Cannon responds first--wasting the scum-bag. Or...so it seems. It turns out that this was all a set-up and Gianni is turning states evidence....and having Cannon 'kill' him would allow him to be in police custody without the mob knowing about it.

In the meantime, Gianni's rather mentally unstable girlfriend, Edie Kowalski is fuming. She wants Cannon dead and vows to do this...but there's a problem. Her father (Leif Erickson) is the head of the mob and has forbidden any retaliation. After all, he reasons, there's no percentage in revenge...and Gianni had it coming. Well, that isn't good enough for this Lady Macbeth sort of woman and she works behind the scenes to get Cannon regardless of her father.

But what about Gianni? And, when Edie finds out he is actually alive...what next? Well, don't expect it to make a lot of sense but it IS very entertaining.

DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL ISN'T...

CLASSIC CANNON. One of William Conrad's old buds at Warner Brothers/ABC tv, Leslie Martinson, directed this runaway story, and one of the few with a not too happy ending. Watch this.

Usually the series took a u-turn and tried to install some sort of "brighter" ending, which was to the liking of producer Quinn Martin. Not in this case.

Martinson worked with Conrad on 77 SUNSET STRIP. He also is responsible for the very first BATMAN movie (1966), and episodes for MANNIX, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and CHIPS.

As expected, it's a violent episode. The series dropped out of the Top 10, although at #14 (a tie with MANNIX), they were still doing fairly well for the 4th season. In the days of no cable, still a large portion of the country was watching this show in the middle of the week, always the plan for CBS.

Cannon is having dinner at some Hollywood restaurant --just as there's a mob hit. Or is it something else? Kudos to veteran Leif Erickson playing the mob boss, who naturally expects to get away with anything at anytime. He is creepy here, to say the least. Erickson had just finished episodes with MANNIX and HARRY O. Perfect for this role.

Not to miss Kitty Winn who plays his daughter in an outstanding role. Taking tips from the GODFATHER saga, Cannon is interfering in "family" business (although he's playing a clever game himself), and despite her father's warnings, Kitty attempts to kill him in his kitchen. This is a knockout scene, because Cannon could've shot her dead just as easily. Call it a tie, and an extremely bizarre one.

Kudos to Martinson as the way he directed Bill Conrad and Kitty Winn in this scene. They must have had a few nervous laughs here, and I wonder if they got this down in a single take.

Kitty gained national fame playing a teen heroin addict in the cult movie PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK (1971), following with THE EXORCIST (1973). Also watch for Anthony Bagetta as a hitman. It must have been fascinating to listen to all these great folks -- between scenes-- and the stories they could tell. Why so many actors wanted to be on the series.

This story definitely has its moments, and will stick with you. Erickson's mansion may look familiar; the Bel Air estate used on many cop shows. Popular character actor Conrad Janis plays pool with Cannon. A fun scene, the way its all set up, but it's relevent to the story.

The Lincoln gets run off the road here, and you'll notice the car is getting banged up a lot lately. Producer Quinn Martin probably acquired a new double.

No question, both Kitty Winn and Leif Erickson should have gotten Emmy nods here. They are terrific as a lethal father and daughter, if there ever was one. One heck of a trip, and wait for the surprise ending. Outstanding.

SEASON 4 LUCKY EPISODE 13. Remastered CBS color dvd box set. Very similar in design to both MANNIX and BARNABY JONES. Released 2016.
