In a marriage perhaps typical of the Victorian era, a genteel but impoverished young woman of 27 is marrying a man of 64 who is in comfortable circumstances. By happenstance Constable Thackeray is standing in for his aged father, who was to be the best man and as luck would have it, Sergeant Cribb decides to accompany him. The Groom needs all the luck he can get because both the bride to be and her family, including her uncle who is to perform the marriage ceremony, have a very intriguing past.
