CRUSADER – Rookie Cop – 1956

This series stars Brian Keith as a man on a mission, after the death of Keith's mother at the hands of the Communist government in Poland. Keith makes it his life's cause to help people get away from Eastern Bloc countries, and set them up in the US. Keith uses his cover as a newspaperman to gain entry into various Red countries. The series ran for 64 episodes over a 2 season run during 1955 and 1956. This particular episode is number 29.

Adams Williams is a refugee from war torn Europe who came to the US to have a new life. He and his wife, Lilyan Chauvin, have embraced the American dream. Williams is now a proud Policeman on a big city force. Rookie cop Adam Williams is doing his rounds on his late night beat. He stops at a late night diner for a word with the owner, Larry Barton. He warns the man that he believes Barton is running a book operation on the side. "Stop, or I'll put you away." Williams tells Barton. Williams then heads out to continue his rounds.

Several minutes later, two men, Sol Gorss and Catl Milletaire, enter the diner. They work for the local mob boss, Thomas Browne Henry. They are here to collect the weeks take. The boss, Henry, is not happy that the last few weeks totals have been down. Barton tries to explain that the increased Police patrols have frightened off some betting types. The two thugs are not up to listening to any excuses. Barton is belted around. When Barton tries to defend himself, the one thug pulls iron and shoots Barton dead.

Williams, hears the shots and rushes back to the diner. The two thugs, Gorss and Milletaire run into the Policeman as they exit, and rounds are soon exchanged. Gorss is killed and Milletaire captured. Newsman, Brian Keith is in town visiting Williams and his wife. He had helped the two, escape from East Germany. Keith becomes involved here when Williams, instead of being hailed a hero, is charged with murder.

The mobster, Milletaire swears that they were there to pay Williams off. He says Williams got a piece of the action to ignore the book making set-up. The thug says that Williams wanted more, and had shot Barton when the cash was not forthcoming. Mlletaire's boss, Thomas Browne Henry pays off Barton's widow, Vivi Janiss, to join in with the slime job on Williams.

Needless to say, our man Keith dives in and starts digging. He soon has the goods on Thomas Browne Henry and the whole rotten deal. The Police get the evidence, and soon all the proper people are wearing some nice bracelets on their way to jail. Williams is cleared.

While this series might seem a bit corny today, at the time it was very popular. Series such as this one, A MAN CALLED X and I LED 3 LIVES were popular shows.

Rookie cop gets into trouble
Paularoc10 July 2013
Matt Anders who has just finished writing a series of magazine articles on refugees in America sees a newspaper article about a hero rookie cop who killed a fleeing murderer. Anders had helped this rookie, Sylvan Danzig, and his wife escape from East Germany seven years previously. Anders decides to visit the Danzigs seeing a good story about a refugee making good. Soon after Anders arrives, in a somewhat implausible story twist, Danzig is arrested for murder of a bookie diner owner and then killing his supposed accomplice in the crime. Anders pretends to be a bookie in order to trap the culprit behind the bookie racket and murder. Adam Williams does an especially good job as Danzig. The episode is an interesting reminder of the influx of European refugees during the Cold War.
