Evidence of French and British antipathy circa 1965.
planktonrules10 March 2014
In "Have a Glass of Wine", Drake is following a trail from one agent to another to another as top secret information is being passed from the UK across the Iron Curtain. At this point, the trail has led to France and Drake knows that a young woman staying at his hotel has the microdot filled with these secrets. When he confronts her, she admits to being the courier and was apparently blackmailed into doing it--and Drake intends to find out who her contact is. However, she is murdered and Drake is framed for this killing. Here is where it gets interesting--not only is he trying to find this contact for British Intelligence but his counterparts with the French Secret Service are trying to do the same. Is this being done in the spirit of cooperation? Nope...and Drake not only has to fight commies but his own supposed allies.

This is an interesting episode because of the statement the show is making about the French. During the 1960s (and even today) there seems to be an amazing degree is distrust or dislike between these allies that I noticed when I visited the two countries (especially in the UK). It's a rare and interesting look at this ambivalent relationship and is worth seeing. My only gripe is that the 'French' sure sounded English and their accents came and went throughout the show!

John Drake Goes Fishing - With a New Spy Gadget!
CoastalCruiser27 March 2015
In this episode we are introduced to the fishing rod that doubles as a means of planting a listening device remotely. The bug is loaded into the hallow barrel of the rod and is propelled to its target with the benefit of a C02 cartridge.

C02 cartridge? Hey, are those things still used? Answer; yes. Who knew? People with C02 BB guns for one. Paintball types for another.

Anyway, this is one of the coolest gadgets yet in John Drake's reconnaissance arsenal. He is also sporting cigarette his lighter that takes pictures, a gadget seen once before in "Don't Nail Him Yet'.

This is a pretty good episode too. It's sporting Warren Mitchell in the guest cast, an actor appearing a record six times across the Danger Man / Secret Agent franchise.

Pretty Good Episode Despite . . .
aramis-112-8048805 September 2022
Despite a typically overblown Warren Mitchell "performance" this is a strong episode.

"Drake" is tracking down the kingpin of a ring of British traitors. He follows to France a girl blackmailed into the ring and all heck breaks loose.

A fun mystery involving a French schoolteacher of dubious antecedents, a wine merchant with an obsession for Napoleon, likeable police just above Keystone Kops level, and plenty of red herrings for an hour show.

Enlightening insights on presumed Anglo-French relations. And a curiosity for Americans: why is Warren Mitchell continually being hired for shows like this, "The Saint" and "The Avengers"? He's the most annoying overactor on 1060s British TV. I can only assume he has the goods on some bigwig at ITV.

A delightful episode - with humour.

In HAVE A GLASS OF WINE, Drake is on the trail of who is stealing British military secrets.

One lead leads to the another, which leads him to Burgundy, France, to a tangled situation - which is a case of mistaken and, hidden identities..

With some delightful performances from some regular DANGER MAN actors, notably, George Benson as the police chief, and the humorous/sinister portrayal Warren Mitchell brings to the French wine dealer, Lamaze.

HAVE A GLASS OF WINE, is one of the few episodes that shows it's 'lighter' side so clearly. And, enjoyably.

This episode was directed by Peter Maxwell - who'd worked on 3 other episodes , and, written by David Stone - who, at this same time, had written the adaptation for the classic film, Repulsion.

Change of accent

Why does George Benson have an English accent at the beginning and a French one later on?
