***SPOILERS*** It's when middleweight contender Lenny Capper's, Bob Carraway, manager and friend Hecky, Frank Sutton, was beaten within an inch of his life by Bull's, Vincent Gardenia, goons the word was out for him to throw the fight that was to give him a shot for the world middleweight crown. And throw the fight he did to prevent him from ending up the same way that Hecky did.

With police women Casey Jones, Beverly Garland, getting into the act, she was a spectator at the fight, and saw Lenny get floored by nothing more then a tap on the chin from his opponent she urged the hospitalized Hecky to press charges against Bull and his goons for putting him, on traction, there. That was the only way to get Bull and his boys from intimidating boxers like Lenny and their families. It took a while for Hecky to get enough guts to stand up to Bull & Co. but in Lenny's cases it was far more difficult. Given a chance, by Bull, to get a champion fight it's decided that Lenny again throw the fight with Bull's money on his far over-matched opponent who just happened to be the Middlewight Champion of the World. To make sure that Lenny goes along with the program Bull gives him a secretly spiked orange, for good luck, that would put him to sleep-in the ring-before he's even as much as jabbed by the "Champ".

***SPOILERS*** The spiked orange that Bull gave Lenny to munch on before the fight was switched by Casey Jones that prevented Lenny from passing out and losing the fight thus becoming the Middleweight Champion of the World. As for the outraged Bull who was about to have Casey done it for spoiling his fun, in winning a big bet on the boxing match, he got pinched in Lenny's locker room after the fight by two NYPD plain clothesmen before he could carry his threat, in having Casey beaten to a pulp, out!

Shades of On the Waterfront or a fistful of other boxing dramas where the fix is in.

Vincent Gardenia plays Bull. A mobster that controls the local boxing. His goons make sure that Bull has a stake in any up and coming contender.

Lenny Capper is one such promising contender. Bull hospitalises his trainer Hecky a few hours before the next fight that Lenny loses.

Casey Jones catches Bull intimidating Lenny's girl. Casey wants to know more about Bull. The police have not been able to make anything against him stick in the past.

This is a well trodden path. You would think an experienced trainer like Hecky would have a handle on how to treat people like Bull or atleast watch their back after rebuffing their advances.

As for Lenny, the future's bright, the future's orange.
