Quotes

  • Fred Dana : Well, Rafferty, I didn't break down and confess. I guess it must be up to you. Over two thousand bucks in counterfeit tickets passed at the track last week... you must be cleanin' up!

Casey Jones : [to Rafferty]  You can go in now.

Fred Dana : Don't worry about a thing, Rafferty. Rubber hoses don't hurt - it's just those thumb screws.

  • Fred Dana : You want to know what I was thinking while I was waiting to go in for the third degree?

Casey Jones : No, not especially.

Fred Dana : I was tryin' to figure out whether the girl made the uniform or the uniform made the girl.

Casey Jones : Well, you keep working at it. Maybe in a year or two you'll figure it out.

  • Fred Dana : [to Casey]  Well, look who's here - the finest of New York's finest.

  • [Fred is elated when the horse he bet on came in at 7-1 odds]

Casey Jones : You really care, don't you?

Fred Dana : Well, I'm makin' money, honey. What's more important than money? That's what gets you to where you want to go.

Casey Jones : And where's that?

Fred Dana : To the top.

Casey Jones : The top of what?

Fred Dana : The heap. You know, I've been everything from a spieler in a carny to a short-order cook. Sure, but I'm on my way now!

  • Casey Jones : I'm interested in money, too. Are you surprised?

Fred Dana : Oh, sure. I couldn't be more surprised if the Statue of Liberty dropped her torch!

  • Fred Dana : Well, what do you know. You mean behind all that class, you're just another operator out for a fast buck?

Casey Jones : Look, don't complain. I'm doing you a favor. I'm only asking you for a little one.

  • Fred Dana : Look, once Bates gets a hold of you, he'll hang on to you until you're no good to him or anybody else - including you.

Casey Jones : I don't get it. Why is Bates so bad for me and so good for you?

Fred Dana : Well, that's different. It's different. I'm just a bum out for a fast buck. I always have been; I always will be.

Casey Jones : You don't think much of yourself, do you?

Fred Dana : No, I'm what you might call a realist. I know what the score is. A guy like me has got to cut corners. I gotta play along with a fella like Bates if I'm ever gonna be somebody, but you - you're somebody already. You don't need Bates. You could marry some great guy. Many guys might want to marry you. Go buy a house like you see in the ads with the flowers and kids and stuff. That's for you.

Casey Jones : That's what you think is good for me. I know what I want. It's something everyone has to decide... for himself.
