Misadventures of a Juror
gjampol21 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Rob (Dick Van Dyke) gladly agrees to serve on a federal jury in a criminal case involving a comely exotic dancer, Marla Hendrix (Sue Ann Langdon), who's accused of smuggling jewelry into the United States. Without being aware that wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) is in the courtroom observing the trial, Rob puts on an embarrassing display of "oogling" the defendant. Laura is not amused by Rob's partiality, and neither are his fellow jurors.

This hilarious takeoff on "12 Angry Men," in which Henry Fonda played a holdout juror, is notable for its supporting cast, which features such familiar faces as Dabbs Greer, Howard Wendell, Herbie Faye, Patsy Kelly and Herb Vigran.

So much good for just one short episode

On top of the extraordinary regular cast, this courtroom show added the great Herb Vigran (whom I had the pleasure of meeting when he was in a play, "Merton of the Movies," too many years ago), the also great Patsy Kelly, veteran Herbie Faye, Doodles Weaver (rather hidden as the bailiff), and the adorable Sue Anne Langdon as the ditzy defendant.

Clever writers have a defense lawyer named "Burger" and a prosecutor named "Mason," with "Burger" played by the veteran talent Dabbs Greer.

This script is good enough in itself -- after all, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" is considered one of the very top shows in all TV history -- but to see the extraordinary collection of talent makes this a genuine must-see show.

I highly recommend "One Angry Man," available at YouTube.

I didn't love this one....but it's worth seeing.

Currently there are two other reviews--one with a 10 and the other a 9. So, my score of 6 and review are definitely at odds with the others...though I still think the episode is worth seeing.

Rob is given jury duty. When he enters the courtroom, he begins to act flirty with the defendant...an exotic dancer who is accused of diamond smuggling. And, this behavior doesn't take place just before the trial even even during it! So, when Rob is the sole juror who thinks she isn't guilty, Laura thinks the worst.

So why didn't I love this one? Two reasons: there have been TONS of sitcom episodes which have used the "12 Angry Men" plotline like this one AND Rob's behaviors on the jury would have easily resulted in his dismissal but oddly didn't.

Overall, despite some plot problems, it's still enjoyable and worth your time.
