A very atypical episode.

"The Meershatz Pipe" is a most unusual installment of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and most likely it was because it was such an early episode. This is because the characters act very atypical...with Buddy being very petty and Rob, well, being pretty much the same. Later, the characters all seemed to love and respect each other much more than in this program.

While working on the script for the next show, Buddy and Rob both seem out of sorts. In fact, they argue and get a bit nasty with each other. At one point, Buddy pulls out a fancy pipe and says Allan* Brady gave it to him and has had him over to his house several times lately...and Rob is eaten up with jealousy, as Allan has never done that for him.

On top of all this nastiness, Rob turns out to be sick and Laura insists he stay home and takes care of himself. But Rob is paranoid about his job and Buddy and sneaks off to work anyway. What's next? See the show.

This isn't a great episode. The love between the characters is absent and it's less fun because of this. Worth seeing but a disappointment compared to later episodes.

In later episodes, the tended to spell it 'Allan Brady'. In this early episode it's 'Alan Brady'. Additionally, like a few of the early shows, Laura is called 'Laurie'.
