All the talk around the house is Billy's tryout for Little League. That talk takes over all else when Billy learns he has made the team as pitcher. As such, Toby feels left out, the symbol of his feelings being Billy's uniform. As such, Toby tells his mother that among his recent accomplishments, he has made the school choir, which has its own robe as a uniform. Doris can see what Toby is doing, and she does whatever she can to bolster his sense of accomplishment in making the choir. Although Toby truly believed he did make the choir, the tryouts haven't even yet occurred. When they do occur, he doesn't make the cut. As everyone in the family tries to put Toby on equal footing as Billy by praising him making the choir, they are unaware that their actions are making it more difficult for Toby to tell them the truth. It gets even worse when Doris, who can see that something is bothering Toby, misdiagnoses the reason. Toby, in turn, compounds the problem by doing things which he believes will get him out of his predicament. When Doris eventually finds out what's going on, she has to figure out how to make things right without making Toby feel worse than he already does.
