The Polish Affaire
Prismark105 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It starts off with the islanders dealing with rationing.

It's not coffee they are drinking it is chicory.

The Nazis plan to use Dr Martel to requitison 150 bicycles for German soldiers. It is all part of a fitness initiative for the locals. Walk instead of riding a bike!

It seems this was a story that would be about the islanders muddling through. I even groaned at what looked like a major contrivance.

A Polish prisoner escapes from the work camp. He ends up in the house of his former lover, someone he once knew when he was stationed in Latvia. What a coincidence!

It did not go unnoticed by me that a character in this story is called James Prideaux. A character from John Le Carre's Tinker Tailor had the same name.

It was all planned by Reinicke. A ruse to arrest Prideaux who was a diplomat in Latvia and send him to Germany where he can be properly interrogated for some important information.

Prideaux is unwilling to report his wife's former lover. Dr Martel sees this as a trap and is also concerned about public health. The Polish workers have Typhus.

A layered story that very much enters the world of espionage.
