[Reinicke has just learn that it is von Bulow who has spread the word that the dead prostitute had previously had an affair with him; he strides into the officers' mess]

Hauptsturmführer Reinicke : Herr von Bulow.

Hauptmann von Bulow : Ah, the gallant Reinicke.

[Reinicke slaps von Bulow with his glove]

Hauptmann von Bulow : If you will give me the names of your seconds, Hauptsturmführer, mine will call on them at ten o'clock tonight.

[Richter has overheard the exchange and comes over to them]

Major Richter : If you two old fools are thinking of fighting a duel, may I remind you that it is an offence under military law.
[Reinicke has challenged von Bulow to a duel. They meet on deserted ground, watched by their "seconds". They stride the regulation distance apart and the umpire gives the order to fire. Reinicke turns, aims and shoots at von Bulow. He misses. Von Bulow now fires, very deliberately aiming slightly away from Reinicke]

Hauptmann von Bulow : [taunting Reinicke] I am an officer and a gentleman. You are merely a bad shot. Come, gentlemen. We must be off to where the *real* war is - and the *real* soldiers are.
