- T'Pol and Archer confront the Syrrannites and meet T'Pau who denies the embassy bombing. Archer, who has Surak's essence, is asked to help. V'Las threatens Enterprise to make sure an attack on the Syrrannites isn't witnessed.
- After crossing the desert and surviving the sand storms, T'Pol and Archer confront the Syrrannites in the Forge. The pair meet T'Pau, who denies any connection with the embassy bombing and Admiral Forrest's death. Archer, now possessing the mental essence of Surak known as the 'katra', agrees to let T'Pau extract it, even after T'Pol's mother T'Les warns the ritual may kill him. Meanwhile Vulcan administrator V'Las is willing to destroy Enterprise to make sure an attack on the Syrrannites isn't witnessed. Former Ambassador Soval allies with Commander Tucker to try to rescue Archer and T'Pol.—Meribor
- Captain Archer and T'Pol meet T'Pau in the sanctuary of the Syrrannites. T'Pau denies the accusation of bombing the United Earth Embassy. Captain Archer and T'Pol are arrested and he discovers that Syran has transferred the mind essence a.k.a "katra" of Surak to him before dying. T'Pau decides to transfer the "katra" to her in a dangerous ritual but she fails. Meanwhile the Enterprise is unsuccessfully trying to rescue Archer and T'Pol. Commander Tucker is contacted by the Administrator V'Las and ordered to leave the orbit of Vulcan. Furthermore, V'Las has the intention of bombing the sanctuary of the pacifists Syrrannites in the Forge and does not want that the Enterprise witnesses the attack.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Ambassador Soval (Gary Graham) is summoned before Administrator V'Las (Robert Foxworth) and the High Council to face punishment over his use of a mind meld. Since the act is widely considered to be criminal by the Vulcan authorities, Soval is summarily dismissed from the Ambassadorial service. Soval never gets a chance to present his evidence against V'Las (who says the Stel himself was a Syrrannite) whom he suspects to be witch hunting the Syrrannites. Meanwhile, Captain Archer and Commander T'Pol are questioned by the Syrrannites. T'Pau says she hasn't left the desert in 2 yrs and hence cannot have bombed the human embassy. She also says that Arev's true name was Syrran and he was the leader of the Syrrannites.
After a short while, T'Pol is taken to see her mother, T'Les (Joanna Cassidy), and the two disagree about the tenets of the group - the Vulcan authorities call them extremists, a term T'Les disagrees with. Soon, Archer begins to see visions of an old Vulcan (who tells Archer that the Vulcans have strayed from their path and now Archer can help them get back to it), and the dissidents determine that he had the Katra of Surak (Bruce Gray) transferred into him via mind meld.
V'Las, now largely unopposed on the Council, becomes increasingly obsessed with decisively ending the Syrrannite threat once and for all. He postpones his plans to bombard the encampment, after delays in convincing Enterprise to leave orbit. He contacts Starfleet, and the Admiralty give Commander Tucker direct orders, which he refuses to carry out. He attempts, with assistance from Soval, to send a rescue shuttle-pod to "The Forge", but they are intercepted by Vulcan patrol vessels. V'Las then finally orders Vulcan warships to directly engage Enterprise, and Soval suggests that they should retreat before they are severely damaged.
A ritual is performed to transfer the Katra into the mind of T'Pau (Kara Zediker) (as the Syrrannites were reluctant to follow a human as their spiritual leader), but the attempt fails (T'POl was against the procedure as there was a risk of killing Archer. But Archer wanted Surak out of him, and agrees). Archer continues to see Surak, who informs him that he must find the relic known as the "Kir'Shara".
The Vulcan military begin to bombard the complex (after driving the Enterprise out of orbit around Vulcan. As V'Las ships cant get target lock due to the magnetic interference, he orders carpet bombing the entire Forge). Archer, T'Pol, and T'Pau remain behind to search for the relic, and Archer is able to use his knowledge to unlock a door to reveal it. As they exit, T'Pol finds her mother, but she soon dies after being seriously injured in the attack.
On Enterprise, Soval reveals that the Vulcans, despite the recent peace accord, are preparing a pre-emptive strike against the Andorians. V'Las wanted the Syrrannites out of the way, since they are pacifists and V'Lar didn't want their thinking to cloud the war that Vulcans were going to start. Tucker orders an immediate course at maximum warp.
