- A fibrous, web-like alien creature comes aboard the ship and several of the crew becomes entangled in it including Archer and Trip, and it seems Hoshi is the only one who can try to communicate with the creature.
- A group of Kreetassans are on board of Enterprise for a friendly meeting. But they leave rather unexpectedly as they seem very offended by something. The crew have no idea what however. But as their ship leaves an alien gel like creature manages to crawl aboard. The creature is growing and growing and shows rather hostile tendencies as it encapsulates five crew members, including captain Archer and commander Tucker. T'Pol, Hoshi and Reed have to come up with a solution quickly. The lives of the five are at stake as the creature begins a symbiotic relationship that in time can't be reversed.—Arnoud Tiele (imdb@tiele.nl)
- On board Enterprise, there has been a minor diplomatic incident with the Kreetassans. Kreetassans storm off the Enterprise when they feel they have been insulted, although it is not clear to Archer as to what triggered this response from them. As the Kreetassan vessel departs, a clear, amoeba-like entity crosses to Enterprise, and systems begin to malfunction on a ship-wide basis. Sato first finds an interference in the communications system, a distortion high-frequency amongst the normal background static. The entity meanwhile travel through the viaducts of the ship and reaches the cargo-hold. Crewmen Rostov (Joseph Will) and Kelly (Renée Elise Goldsberry) are both trapped in a cargo-hold by the entity which has now grown tendrils. Kelly had found that light went out in the cargo hold and sent Rostov to fix. When Rostov didn't come back, she decided to go herself and both got trapped. Before being trapped Kelly manages to call Archer and warn him.
Captain Archer, Commander Tucker, Lieutenant Reed and another crewman go to investigate and are all caught as well, except Reed who escapes through the cargo-hold-hatch, severing one of the tendrils in the process.
Ensign Mayweather suggests tracking the Kreetassans down to ask about the entity, while Doctor Phlox examines the severed tendril. He determines that those entrapped are becoming symbiotically linked together through the entity. Sato wants to communicate with it (Since Phlox suggested that the high neural activity in the tendril indicates the entity being capable of higher functions), but Sub-Commander T'Pol decides to neutralize it instead. Phlox suggests that the entity is photosensitive and T'Pol orders EM emitters to be used for the attack on the entity. As the attack commences, T'Pol finds that the emitters are causing pain to their own crew, indicating that the entity is neurologically linked to the entity. Meanwhile Sato finds that the language of the entity is some form of higher mathematics. She asks T'Pol for help to decipher it.
Mayweather manages to find the Kreetassans, asking for any information they may have. Kreetassans agree that the entity may have attached itself to their ship when they visited its home-world. They agree to share the location of the entity's home world, but only after Mayweather apologizes for the earlier incident. Apparently the "misunderstanding" occurred when the Kreetassans were taken to the mess-hall to find many of the crew eating in public, which they regard as highly vulgar.
T'Pol, Sato, and Reed make their way to the cargo-bay to attempt communication. Reed assembles experimental force-field-emitters, which are able to protect them from the entity's tendrils. Sato uses the Universal Translator to modulate a frequency that the entity can understand. After several attempts, the entity responds. It gives them new, more precise coordinates on its home-world, and Phlox notices that the bio-signs of the trapped personnel are stabilizing. The entity then releases the personnel, shrinking back to its original size. On the entity's planet, the organism and the severed tendril are both released and quickly re-absorbed into a larger alien body. As the shuttle-pod returns to Enterprise, dawn breaks and the entire area is revealed to be covered with a single huge organism.
