Dana Andrews breaks into Family Affair
TheFearmakers22 May 2023
By 1969, former Hollywood star Dana Andrews was bridging villain parts in big-budget movies, hero parts in low-budget movies, and random television guest spots, like on FAMILY AFFAIR Season 4's THE WINGS OF AN ANGEL opposite Brian Keith (right before Dana landed his own soap opera BRIGHT FUTURE), whose father Robert Keith played his would-be father-in-law in MY FOOLISH HEART...

Here, as a white collar ex-con fresh out of prison, Dana's Harv Mullen stays at the Davis apartment, but soon Buffy and Jodie get paranoid: he hides his piggy-bank, she hides her doll's mock-jewelry while progressive Sissy gives Harv a scholastic interview about prison life, eventually making the poor guy so overwhelmed he almost leaves... until, like all classic sitcoms, everything's resolved by a soft fatherly lecture about how prisoners are people too.

I was unmoved

Warning: Spoilers
Dana Andrews might have been a fine actor, but he wasn't the right choice for this role. As Bill's friend, Harv, Andrews is stiff as a board. He has no energy, and his facial expression never changes. I didn't sympathize with this character at all. He wasn't a victim. He knowingly did something that was wrong. The twins and Mr French initially have negative reactions to Marv, and I couldn't blame them. Ultimately, Bill scolds Buffy and Jody for their unkind treatment of Marv. The twins do a complete turnaround, and now want Marv to stay on as a houseguest. A happy ending which didn't convince me. A different actor might have made everything more believable.

Dana Andrews Guest Stars

Harv Mullen (Andrews) is a friend of Bill's just released from prison for bribery. Bill invites him to stay with him till he finds a job.

One of the best of Season 4. Andrews had starred in many Hollywood classics such as "Laura" and "The Best Years Of Our Lives". He gives a fine subtle performance here. Buffy and Jody are afraid Mullen may rob them and French thinks he should not be around the children. Cissy treats him a subject to be studied for her sociology class. Bill gives one of his best lessons to the twins at the end.
